Modeling Dense Star Clusters in the Milky Way and beyond with the Cluster Monte Carlo Code

Carl L. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: We describe the public release of the Cluster Monte Carlo (CMC) code, which is a parallel N-body code for modeling dense star clusters. CMC uses a star-by-star approach to treat collisional stellar dynamics and reproduces the cumulative effect of many two-body encounters as a single effective encounter. The public release of CMC is integrated with the COSMIC population synthesis code, allowing for consistent simulations and studies of star cluster dynamics and population synthesis.

Compact object mergers in hierarchical triples from low-mass young star clusters

Alessandro A. Trani et al.

Summary: A study finds that the merging of inner binaries in a triple system depends not only on gravitational wave radiation, but also on the von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai mechanism. Binary mergers in triple systems have lower mass ratios and higher primary masses compared to dynamically assembled binaries. The eccentricity and mass spectrum of merging binaries are the strongest features for identifying gravitational wave mergers from triple systems.

AGN as potential factories for eccentric black hole mergers

J. Samsing et al.

Summary: New research has found that black hole mergers in active galactic nuclei disk environments can result in an excess of eccentric mergers compared to circular mergers. This phenomenon may be due to frequent interactions between single and binary black holes, as well as small mutual inclinations.

Hydrodynamics of Collisions and Close Encounters between Stellar Black Holes and Main-sequence Stars

Kyle Kremer et al.

Summary: Recent analyses show that close encounters between stars and stellar black holes in dense star clusters lead to various outcomes, including tidal captures, disruptions, or physical collisions. Hydrodynamic simulations reveal that stars can be fully disrupted, partially disrupted, or tidally captured based on the distance of the encounter. The properties of the material bound to the black hole at the end of simulations provide insights into the expected accretion process and associated electromagnetic signatures.

Stellar-mass black holes in young massive and open stellar clusters - IV. Updated stellar-evolutionary and black hole spin models and comparisons with the LIGO-Virgo O1/O2 merger-event data

Sambaran Banerjee

Summary: This study conducted long-term, direct, relativistic many-body computations in model dense stellar clusters using up-to-date stellar-evolutionary, supernova, and remnant natal-kick models. The results showed that these models can produce dynamically paired black hole mergers that are in agreement with observations, while also suggesting that young massive clusters and moderately massive open clusters may produce detectable gravitational wave sources.

Implications of Eccentric Observations on Binary Black Hole Formation Channels

Michael Zevin et al.

Summary: Orbital eccentricity is a key discriminator for differentiating between dynamical and isolated formation scenarios of binary black hole mergers; the number of observed eccentric mergers plays a crucial role in constraining the fraction of detectable systems from dense star clusters; as the number of eccentric observations increases, constraints on the fraction of detectable systems from dense star clusters become tighter.

Order in the chaos: Eccentric black hole binary mergers in triples formed via strong binary-binary scatterings

Manuel Arca Sedda et al.

Summary: The study examines the formation and evolution of black hole triples in dense clusters, finding that a majority are hierarchical and tend to evolve towards prograde configurations. The inner binary shrinkage is significant in retrograde, nearly planar configurations, with the torque exerted by the outer black hole leading to tighter inner orbits in general, potentially resulting in coalescence within a Hubble time and the release of gravitational waves. The mass distribution of mergers in this astrophysical channel reflects the original black hole binary spectrum, indicating a connection between eccentric sources detected by high-frequency detectors in high-velocity dispersion stellar environments and those detected by low-frequency detectors in low-density clusters.

Fast Optical Transients from Stellar-mass Black Hole Tidal Disruption Events in Young Star Clusters

Kyle Kremer et al.

Summary: Observational and theoretical indications suggest that stellar-mass black holes may play an active role in stellar clusters, with tidal disruption events occurring at a significant rate in young stellar clusters. These events exhibit characteristics such as fast rise times, high X-ray luminosities, and bright optical luminosities, sharing similarities with the emerging class of Fast Blue Optical Transients.

Flux-based statistical prediction of three-body outcomes

Barak Kol

Summary: Since Poincare, the three-body problem has been known to lack a general deterministic solution, leading to the use of statistical approaches. Existing methods have flaws in equating probability with phase space volume and introducing an adjustable parameter. This paper introduces a statistical prediction of decay rates, showing significant improvement in accuracy through early numerical tests.

Metallicity-dependent wind parameter predictions for OB stars

Jorick S. Vink et al.

Summary: Mass-loss rates and terminal wind velocities are key parameters determining the kinetic wind energy and momenta of massive stars. New research has discovered a weak-wind 'dip' at a specific temperature, providing important information for studying wind-driving physics. In low metallicity environments, the requirement for mass-loss rates to reproduce the 'heavy' black holes from LIGO/Virgo becomes even more stringent.

Testing the flux-based statistical prediction of the three-body problem

Viraj Manwadkar et al.

Summary: An extensive comparison was made between the statistical properties of non-hierarchical three-body systems and the corresponding theoretical predictions. Four quantities characterizing the statistical distribution of ergodic disintegrations were measured, showing agreement with the theoretical prediction down to the 1 percent level and providing strong evidence for the flux-based three-body statistical formalism. The results represent a significant leap in accuracy compared to previous three-body statistical theories and enable future tests of statistical theories.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.
