SDSS-IV MaNGA: How the Stellar Populations of Passive Central Galaxies Depend on Stellar and Halo Mass

Grecco A. Oyarzun et al.

Summary: Spatially resolved and co-added SDSS-IV MaNGA spectra were analyzed to investigate the dependence of central galaxy assembly on stellar mass and halo mass. It was found that the properties of host halos can affect the stellar populations of centrals with identical stellar mass, and high-mass centrals experienced unique early formation histories.

Realistic synthetic integral field spectroscopy with RealSim-IFS

Connor Bottrell et al.

Summary: The direct comparison between observed galaxies and those formed in numerical simulations can be achieved through forward modeling simulated galaxies into synthetic observations. The use of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) allows for a broader range of comparisons, and tools like REALSIM-IFS can generate synthetic IFS observations from hydrodynamical simulations with high generality and accuracy.

iMaNGA: mock MaNGA galaxies based on IllustrisTNG and MaStar SSPs - I. Construction and analysis of the mock data cubes

Lorenza Nanni et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to generate mock galaxies from the hydro-dynamical IllustrisTNG simulations and compare them with real observational data. By including the same instrumental effects and procedures as in the acquisition and analysis of real data, and using new stellar population models based on the MaNGA stellar library, the mock data has similar characteristics to the real data. The results show that the recovered age and metallicity gradients are consistent with the real data, and the simulated star formation histories closely resemble the observed ones.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: pyPipe3D Analysis Release for 10,000 Galaxies

S. F. Sanchez et al.

Summary: In this article, we present an analysis of the final MaNGA data set included in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 17 using the pyPipe3D pipeline. The pipeline extracts spatially resolved spectroscopic properties from the integral field spectroscopic (IFS) data cubes, including the stellar population and ionized gas emission lines. A detailed description of the analysis process, pipeline, adopted stellar population library, morphological and photometric analysis, data model for spatially resolved properties, and individual galaxy properties in the final catalog is provided. Comparisons with previous pipeline versions and other tools using the data set are also included, along with a practical example of how to use the full data set and final catalog.

Stellar and weak lensing profiles of massive galaxies in the Hyper-Suprime Cam survey and in hydrodynamic simulations

Felipe Ardila et al.

Summary: A consistent comparison of mass and mass profiles of massive central galaxies at z ~0.4 from HSC observations and simulations was conducted, revealing discrepancies between Illustris and TNG100, especially in the inner regions. This study indicates that TNG100 may not be efficient enough in quenching star formation at certain halo mass scales, while Ponos simulations show excess mass due to overcooling and excess star formation in central regions.

The stellar halos of ETGs in the IllustrisTNG simulations

C. Pulsoni et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the rotational support and intrinsic shapes of stellar halos in early-type galaxies are influenced by their accretion and merger histories, as well as the stellar mass. Low-mass galaxies are mainly driven by in-situ stars in shaping their halos, while high-mass galaxies and events with high f(exsitu) values affect the rotation velocity and shape.

Effective N-body models of composite collisionless stellar systems

Carlo Nipoti et al.

Summary: Gas-poor galaxies can be modeled as composite collisionless stellar systems and studied using numerical N-body simulations. A novel method is presented to conceive N-body realizations, where each particle's mass is assigned fractions to different components for post-processing. This method is applied to an N-body simulation of tidal stripping of a two-component satellite dwarf galaxy orbiting the Milky Way.

David R. Law et al.

Summary: The Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) program has observed 9269 galaxies in the low redshift universe with integral-field spectroscopy from 2014 to 2020. A major revision of the MaNGA data pipeline architecture has been presented, demonstrating that the revised pipeline measures the instrumental LSF accurately, allowing reliable measurements of astrophysical velocity dispersions.
