Dynamical interplay of disc thickness and interstellar gas: Implication for the longevity of spiral density waves

Soumavo Ghosh et al.

Summary: This article investigates the effect of the finite thickness of a galactic disc on non-axisymmetric perturbations and the longevity of the spiral density waves. It is found that a decreased disc thickness makes the disc more stable against non-axisymmetric perturbations and shortens the lifespan of the spiral density waves. Furthermore, interstellar gas and disc thickness have opposite effects on the disc stability and longevity of the spiral density waves.

The effect of dark matter halo shape on bar buckling and boxy/peanut bulges

Ankit Kumar et al.

Summary: The shape of the dark matter halo affects the formation and buckling of bars, with oblate haloes causing delayed bar formation and buckling, and prolate haloes leading to earlier formation and buckling. However, the duration of the first buckling event remains almost the same. Bars in prolate haloes exhibit the longest buckling signatures compared to spherical and oblate haloes, and may promote bar thickening and disc heating.

Age dissection of the vertical breathing motions in Gaia DR2: evidence for spiral driving

Soumavo Ghosh et al.

Summary: Gaia DR2 has discovered breathing motions in the Milky Way, suggesting that spiral density waves may be the driving mechanism. A simulation model and observations demonstrate that the amplitude of breathing motions increases with distance from the mid-plane and decreases with age, supporting the hypothesis.

Genesis of morpho-kinematic lopsidedness in minor merger of galaxies

Soumavo Ghosh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence of m = 1 lopsidedness in disc galaxies during minor mergers. It shows that a minor merger triggers a prominent m = 1 lopsidedness in stars of the host galaxy, but this lopsidedness disappears rapidly after the merger. A delayed merger can lead to a prolonged m = 1 lopsidedness, which rotates in a pattern different from the m = 2 bar pattern. Furthermore, the merger causes an off-centred stellar disc-dark matter halo configuration in the host galaxy.

Fate of stellar bars in minor merger of galaxies

Soumavo Ghosh et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dynamical impact of a minor galaxy merger on the fate of a stellar bar in the merger remnant, finding that the central stellar bar weakens substantially in the post-merger remnants. The efficiency of mass accumulation from the satellite in the central parts of merger remnants depends on the orbital parameters as well as on the satellite's morphology. Consequently, different minor merger models display different degrees of bar-weakening event, suggesting that minor galaxy mergers are a plausible avenue for bar weakening in disc galaxies.

Galaxy flybys: evolution of the bulge, disc, and spiral arms

Ankit Kumar et al.

Summary: Galaxy flybys and mergers are common occurrences in the low-redshift Universe, with flybys playing a significant role in the exchange of mass and energy between galaxies. This study investigated the impact of minor flybys on Milky Way mass galaxies, focusing on the bulges, discs, and spiral arms. While flybys resulted in disc thickening and increased dynamism in pseudo-bulges, they had little effect on non-rotating classical bulges.

The major mechanism to drive turbulence in star-forming galaxies

Xiaoling Yu et al.

Summary: By studying the mechanisms driving turbulence in high-redshift galaxies, it was found that a model combining gravitational instability and stellar feedback best fits the observations. A model relying solely on stellar feedback underestimates velocity dispersion and does not replicate the observed trend with gas fraction.
