The terrestrial planet formation paradox inferred from high-resolution N-body simulations

J. M. Y. Woo et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in GPU hardware and N-body simulation code GENGA have allowed for unprecedented resolution in simulations of planet formation. This study reports high-resolution N-body simulations of terrestrial planet formation under different assumptions, revealing discrepancies in the inner solar system structure and isotopic differences. The results suggest the need to consider alternative initial conditions to explain the giant impacts and leftover planetesimals in the solar system.

The 'breaking the chains' migration model for super-Earth formation: the effect of collisional fragmentation

Leandro Esteves et al.

Summary: The study suggests that perfect accretion is a suitable approximation for dynamic purposes in the scenario described. Despite common fragmentation events, only around 10% of the system mass is fragmented during a typical 'late instability phase', with most fragments being reacreted by surviving planets. The limited total mass in fragments proves insufficient to qualitatively alter the final system dynamical configuration compared to simulations where fragmentation is disregarded.

A Star-sized Impact-produced Dust Clump in the Terrestrial Zone of the HD 166191 System

Kate Y. L. Su et al.

Summary: We report on five years of 3-5 μm photometry measurements obtained by warm Spitzer to track the dust debris emission in the terrestrial zone of HD 166191 in combination with simultaneous optical data. The debris production in this young system increased significantly in early 2018 and reached a record high level by the end of the Spitzer mission, suggesting intense collisional activity likely due to either initial assembling of terrestrial planets through giant impacts or dynamical shake-up from unseen planet-mass objects or recent planet migration. A star-size dust clump was detected during its infrared brightening, and the minimum size and mass of the clump were constrained using multiwavelength transit profiles.

The eccentricity distribution of wide binaries and their individual measurements

Hsiang-Chih Hwang et al.

Summary: This paper develops a Bayesian approach to measure the eccentricity distribution of wide binaries based on high-precision astrometric measurements from the Gaia satellite. The results reveal two different formation mechanisms dominating at different separation regimes, providing a new perspective for understanding binary formation and evolution.

Susan Higashio et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new method for searching for new members of nearby young stellar associations (YSAs) using virtual reality and Gaia data. They also suggest several new YSA members with infrared excesses, highlighting the effectiveness of this method in determining mass regimes where isochrones are degenerate.

Carl Melis et al.

Summary: TYC 8830 410 1 is an extremely dusty main-sequence star with inner planetary system dust and a companion star. It experiences dipper-like dimming events, indicating the presence of dust clouds orbiting the star, possibly generated by giant impact events.

V488 Per Revisited: No Strong Mid-infrared Emission Features and No Evidence for Stellar/substellar Companions

Swetha Sankar et al.

Summary: We characterized the planetary system architecture for V488 Per, the dustiest main-sequence star known, confirming the presence of both outer and inner planetary system dust populations. Analysis of mid-infrared spectroscopy suggests the possibility of large grain sizes or grain compositions dominated by species like amorphous carbon and metallic iron. The absence of solid-state emission features in the mid-infrared spectrum is very unusual among main-sequence stars with warm orbiting dust particles.

Planetary embryo collisions and the wiggly nature of extreme debris discs

Lewis Watt et al.

Summary: This study uses numerical simulations to investigate the rarity of extreme debris disc detections, finding that vapor released from impacts has a non-uniform distribution, and the resulting dust distribution depends on the mass ratio and impact angle of the collision. The results suggest that the non-uniform distribution of post-collision dust may cause the formation or lack of short-term flux variations.

Formation of Venus, Earth and Mars: Constrained by Isotopes

Helmut Lammer et al.

Summary: The current state of knowledge on terrestrial planet formation is discussed, focusing on different planet formation models and isotopic data. Accretion processes, including pebble accretion, explain the rapid growth of planets like Earth and Venus within the protoplanetary disk's lifetime. The relative roles of pebble accretion and giant impacts in planet formation need further investigation to better understand the process.

Estimating Distances from Parallaxes. V. Geometric and Photogeometric Distances to 1.47 Billion Stars in Gaia Early Data Release 3

C. A. L. Bailer-Jones et al.

Summary: Stellar distances are essential in astrophysics, and the publication of 1.47 billion stellar parallaxes from Gaia significantly contributes to this field. Despite challenges with faint or distant stars, a probabilistic approach using a three-dimensional model of the Galaxy has been developed to estimate geometric and photogeometric distances. Photogeometric estimates generally show higher accuracy and precision compared to geometric distances, especially for stars with poor parallaxes, and are provided in a publicly available catalog.

Formation of planetary systems by pebble accretion and migration: Hot super-Earth systems from breaking compact resonant chains

Andre Izidoro et al.

Summary: Studies show that approximately 30% of main sequence stars host planets with sizes between 1 and 4 times Earth's radii and orbital periods less than 100 days. Through simulations and research, it is found that the formation of super-Earth systems may be related to factors such as pebble accretion, disk-planet tidal interactions, and usually result in multiple planetary systems.

A New Sample of Warm Extreme Debris Disks from the ALLWISE Catalog

Attila Moor et al.

Summary: Extreme debris disks (EDDs) are rare systems with large amounts of warm dust surrounding main-sequence stars. The identified EDDs exhibit characteristics such as high dust temperatures and mid-IR emission variability. Wide-orbit pairs are more common in EDD systems, and a majority of giant collisions in these systems seem to occur after the first 100 Myr.

Summary: The study presents a detailed analysis of the astrophysical parameters of the poorly studied Sco-Cen member HD 152384 and its circumstellar environment, revealing the presence of a tenuous circumstellar disk rich in refractory elements but depleted of volatile elements. This unique disk, reminiscent of those seen in white dwarfs, may have originated from collisions in a newly formed planetary system.

Evaluating Rotation Periods of M Dwarfs across the Ages

Mark Popinchalk et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers examined rotation rates of M dwarfs at different ages to establish benchmarks for M dwarf gyrochronology. They found that the transition from rapid to slow rotation in clusters depends on spectral type, with later spectral types transitioning at older ages. Evidence of rotation stalling for late M's in the field sample suggests that the transition happens much later for mid- to late-type M dwarfs.

Extreme Variability of the V488 Persei Debris Disk

G. H. Rieke et al.

Summary: V488 Persei is the most extreme debris disk known in terms of the fraction of stellar luminosity it intercepts and reradiates, with highly variable infrared output likely caused by collisions of large planetesimals. The dust resulting from these collisions is falling into the star due to drag by the stellar wind.

Can a jumping-Jupiter trigger the Moon's formation impact?

Sandro R. DeSouza et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the formation of the Moon may have been triggered by an early dynamical instability of giant planets. Simulations show that collisions between terrestrial planets occurred after the instability, with about 15% having the right conditions for a Moon-forming impact. Additionally, it was found that there is a delay of approximately 20 million years between the time of instability and the Moon-forming impact.
