Unresolved Binaries in the Intermediate Mass Range in the Pleiades Star Cluster*

Alina A. Malofeeva et al.

Summary: The identification of binary stars in resolved stellar populations is challenging, but it can be estimated effectively using the photometric diagram constructed with pseudocolors. In the Pleiades star cluster, the binary star ratio is between 0.54 and 0.70, while the ratio of systems with a multiplicity of more than two is between 0.10 and 0.14. The distribution of the component mass ratio follows a power law, and there are expected to be a large number of brown dwarfs among secondary components with mass below 0.5 times solar mass.

Stellar and substellar companions from Gaia EDR3 Proper-motion anomaly and resolved common proper-motion pairs

Pierre Kervella et al.

Summary: The multiplicity survey is significantly improved by using a combination of the PMa, CPM, and RUWE indicators, which enhances the exhaustivity of companion detection and improves accuracy. The detection of CPM companions for bright stars provides a useful proxy for estimating their distance with higher accuracy than the HIPPARCOS method.

Observationally Constraining the Starspot Properties of Magnetically Active M67 Sub-subgiant S1063

Natalie M. Gosnell et al.

Summary: Our understanding of the impact of magnetic activity on stellar evolution is expanding as we uncover new findings. In this study, we focused on S1063, a prototypical sub-subgiant in the open cluster M67, and used a novel technique to analyze starspots over a multiyear time frame. The results show that the spot filling factor of S1063 ranged from 20% to 45% over four years, with an average of 30%. These findings suggest that sub-subgiants, including S1063, are magnetically active spotted stars, similar to RS CVn systems.

Age Spreads and Systematics in Lambda Orionis with Gaia DR2 and the SPOTS Tracks

Lyra Cao et al.

Summary: In this paper, we investigate the robustness of age measurements, age spreads, and stellar models in young pre-main-sequence stars. By studying the lambda Orionis cluster within the Orion star-forming complex, using Gaia data and star-by-star dereddening methods, we find that incorporating the structural impact of starspots or magnetic fields significantly changes the cluster age. We also conclude that star-by-star dereddening methods provide a smaller age spread compared to techniques using uniform extinction, indicating a potentially long star formation timescale for the lambda Orionis cluster.

The Factory and the Beehive. IV. A Comprehensive Study of the Rotation X-Ray Activity Relation in Praesepe and the Hyades

Alejandro Nunez et al.

Summary: X-ray observations of low-mass stars in open clusters provide essential insights into the dependence of magnetic activity on stellar properties and their evolution. This study presents an updated analysis of the rotation-X-ray activity relation in the Praesepe and Hyades clusters, based on updated membership catalogs and collected X-ray detections. The results reveal important findings regarding the saturation of X-ray activity, the relation between Rossby number and X-ray luminosity, and the coronal parameters of binary and single cluster members.

Detailed Chemical Abundances for a Benchmark Sample of M Dwarfs from the APOGEE Survey

Diogo Souto et al.

Summary: Individual chemical abundances for 14 elements are derived for a sample of M dwarfs using high-resolution, near-infrared H-band spectra. The study finds good agreement between M dwarfs in binary systems and their warmer primary stars, indicating that M dwarfs can be used to calibrate empirical relationships. However, there is a systematic offset when comparing the results with the APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundances Pipeline. The APOGEE spectra can be used to examine Galactic chemical evolution using large samples of selected M dwarfs.

Revealing the Field Sub-subgiant Population Using a Catalog of Active Giant Stars and Gaia EDR3

Emily M. Leiner et al.

Summary: Sub-subgiant stars (SSGs) are found below the subgiant and/or red giant branches in star clusters, and they are thought to result from rapid rotation and magnetic field inhibition of convection. This study uses data from the field to identify SSG candidates among active giant binaries (RS CVns), and finds a significant expansion in the number of known SSGs. The presence of SSGs among RS CVn systems suggests that they are a normal phase of evolution, rather than rare occurrences in dense star clusters.

The Gaia-ESO survey: constraining evolutionary models and ages for young low mass stars with measurements of lithium depletion and rotation

A. S. Binks et al.

Summary: A growing concern has emerged regarding the discrepancies between standard stellar models and observations of pre-main sequence stars in clusters. In this study, researchers tested different models, including those with surface magnetic fields and cool starspots, and found that magnetic models provide better fit for the color-magnitude diagrams and lithium depletion patterns. The study also revealed a correlation between rotation periods and the brightness and lithium depletion of stars.

Chromospheric Activity of Periodic Variable Stars Based on the LAMOST Low- and Medium-resolution Spectral Survey

Summary: By analyzing spectral data, this study found that the activity fraction of stars with later spectral type decreases significantly as the absolute Galactic height increases. Moreover, at the same absolute Galactic height, the activity fractions in eclipsing binaries are higher than those in single stars. Additionally, the power-law index of rapid rotators shows an increasing trend from F- to K-type stars, and angular momentum and magnetic momentum are positively correlated.

The surface magnetic activity of the weak-line T Tauri stars TWA 7 and TWA 25

B. A. Nicholson et al.

Summary: In this study, spectropolarimetric observations of low-mass weak-line T Tauri stars TWA 25 and TWA 7 were analyzed, which revealed predominantly toroidal and non-axisymmetric surface magnetic fields for both stars. Surface brightness distributions were reconstructed to filter out activity-induced radial velocity variations, ruling out the presence of close-in giant planets for both stars. Longitudinal magnetic field measurements were shown to be useful in identifying activity-induced radial velocity variations.

Mapping Stellar Surfaces. II. An Interpretable Gaussian Process Model for Light Curves

Rodrigo Luger et al.

Summary: The use of Gaussian processes for modeling astronomical time series data sets has become popular due to their ease of use and flexibility. However, they are less useful when the starspot signal is of primary interest, in which case explicit modeling of individual starspots is preferred. The closed-form expression derived in this study allows for robust inference of physical parameters from light curves, with implications for understanding stellar variability, magnetic activity, and exoplanet searches.

Parallax Systematics and Photocenter Motions of Benchmark Eclipsing Binaries in Gaia EDR3

Keivan G. Stassun et al.

Summary: Analyses of parallaxes observed by the Gaia satellite have shown significant improvements in systematics over time, with global systematics in parallaxes no longer statistically significant for a sample of benchmark eclipsing binaries. The Renormalized Unit Weight Error (RUWE) statistic is highly sensitive to unresolved companions and photocenter motion of binaries, suggesting that slightly elevated RUWE values may indicate unresolved binaries and can predict photocenter motion accurately.
