Monitoring and eco-toxicity effect of paraben-based pollutants in sediments/seawater, north of the Persian Gulf

Hossein Arfaeinia et al.

Summary: This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of paraben congeners in various wastewater treatment plants, as well as seawater and sediments from the Persian Gulf. It demonstrates differences in removal efficiency and concentrations of parabens, and highlights negative ecological effects on certain aquatic populations. These findings contribute to a better understanding of paraben pollution and its potential risks to the environment.

Thais P. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the presence of FIP and FIP-S in surface waters of the Guandu River basin in Rio de Janeiro, with FIP quantified in the range of 0.132-2.44 μg/L and FIP-S detected in most samples. This study highlights the importance of monitoring studies in this region for the city of Rio de Janeiro.

A critical review of trends in advanced oxidation processes for the removal of benzophenone-3, fipronil, and propylparaben from aqueous matrices: Pathways and toxicity changes

Ivo A. Ricardo et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used for the degradation of Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), fipronil (FIP), and propylparaben (PPB) in aqueous matrices. The review also surveys recent progress in overcoming the negative effects of operational parameters. It highlights the importance of incorporating Green Chemistry practices, such as the use of red mud for persulfate activation, in these processes. However, the challenge of achieving high degradation rates in real matrices remains. Successful degradation of target-CEC with the formation of less toxic transformation products has been reported for BP-3 and PPB.

A review on the stereospecific fate and effects of chiral conazole fungicides

Lucie Bielska et al.

Summary: The production and use of chiral pesticides are driven by the need for more complex molecules to combat a wider range of pests and crop diseases, but the fate and effects of these pesticides, particularly conazole fungicides, are not fully understood. Research on the stereoselective behavior and effects of chiral pesticides like CFs is crucial in the fields of environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology to better understand their environmental implications and guide future research and development.

Contrasting the performance of photo-Fenton at neutral pH in the presence of different organic iron-complexes using hydrogen peroxide or persulfate as oxidants for naproxen degradation and removal of antimicrobial activity

Gizele D. Silva et al.

Summary: This study compared the combination of different iron complexes and oxidants in the degradation of naproxen through photo-Fenton, finding that all complexes were effective at neutral pH but performance varied under different conditions. The use of FeCit complex with H2O2 was found to be the most cost-effective option in terms of operational and electrical energy costs.

A critical review of advanced oxidation processes for emerging trace organic contaminant degradation: Mechanisms, factors, degradation products, and effluent toxicity

Arbab Tufail et al.

Summary: The persistent and low biodegradability of trace organic contaminants reduce their removal effectiveness in conventional wastewater treatments. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been extensively studied for degrading a wide range of TrOCs by producing reactive oxygen species. Factors such as concentration and nature of TrOCs, bulk wastewater characteristics, and dose of chemicals/catalysts used affect the degradation rates by different AOPs.

Assessment of different iron sources for continuous flow solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH for sulfamethoxazole removal in actual MWWTP effluents

P. Soriano-Molina et al.

Summary: This study compared three iron sources for removing sulfamethoxazole in secondary effluents from two wastewater treatment plants using continuous flow solar photo-Fenton. Fe3+-EDDS achieved the highest SMX removal in both effluents, while wastewater composition significantly affected reagent consumption and operating costs. The cost efficiency of SMX removal was highest for Fe3+-NTA, followed by FeSO4 and Fe3+-EDDS.
