Understanding the hydrogeochemical processes and physical parameters controlling the groundwater chemistry of a tropical river basin, South India

Chandrika Dhanapalan Aju et al.

Summary: The study on the hydrogeochemistry of groundwater in the Kallada River Basin in South India revealed rock-water interaction processes and major ion concentration changes, providing significant insights into the hydrogeochemical processes in KRB. The dominant groundwater types and geochemical associations varied spatially and temporally, highlighting the complex hydrogeochemical characteristics of the region. The pre-monsoon water types were Ca2+-Mg2+-Cl- while post-monsoon saw a shift to Na+-Cl-, with deeper wells showing a consistent Na+-Cl- water type throughout the seasons.

Assessment of Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers Using Multivariate Statistical Analyses and Hydrochemical Facies Evolution-Based Model

Soumaya Hajji et al.

Summary: This study investigates the groundwater quality in the shallow coastal aquifer of Sfax, Tunisia and identifies the main factors affecting groundwater chemistry. The results show that groundwater quality is mainly controlled by natural and anthropogenic factors. Overexploitation of groundwater not only degrades the water quality but also leads to seawater intrusion. The research highlights the importance of managing groundwater resources and developing suitable plans for water resource exploitation and protection.

An Integrated Approach for Deciphering Hydrogeochemical Processes during Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers

Hend S. Abu Salem et al.

Summary: Understanding the hydrogeochemical processes and flow patterns in the mixing freshwater/saltwater zone is crucial for managing freshwater in worldwide coastal aquifers. This study focuses on investigating the seawater intrusion in the Egyptian Nile Delta aquifer through a multidisciplinary approach involving hydrogeochemical, statistical analysis, and DC resistivity measurements. The results show the status of the seawater intrusion and provide insights into the compositional thresholds of certain ions, indicating wells affected by the intrusion. The study also demonstrates the effectiveness of combining hydrogeochemical facies and resistivity investigations for large-scale characterization and management of coastal groundwater.

The salinity origin and hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater in the Oued Kert basin, north-eastern of Morocco

Hicham Gueddari et al.

Summary: Water scarcity in the Rif region of northwestern Morocco, particularly in the Kert plain, has led to significant groundwater exploitation. This study aims to identify the source of dissolved elements and the mechanism of groundwater salinization in the Oued Kert basin. The results indicate that alluvial and evaporate rocks are the main contributors to groundwater mineralization in the region, but irrigation and saltwater intrusion also play a role in altering aquifer quality.

Mahmoud M. El Waheidi et al.

Summary: A hydrogeophysical investigation was conducted along the NE part of the Gulf of Aqaba coast covering a total area of about 40 km(2), aiming to provide decision makers with information about the main aquifer characteristics. The results showed that the coastal aquifer is separated into northern and southern zones, and the groundwater quality is unsuitable for drinking but partially adequate for irrigation.

Effectiveness and comparison of physical barriers on seawater intrusion and nitrate accumulation in upstream aquifers

Qiguo Sun et al.

Summary: The construction of a physical barrier can reduce nitrate discharge to the sea and lead to nitrate accumulation in upstream aquifers. The accumulation degree is influenced by various factors, including the barrier height, location, nitrate infiltration rate, concentration, inflow, and dissolved organic carbon concentration. The build-up of nitrates is a long-term process that affects denitrification due to the formation of a nitrate accumulation zone behind the barrier.

Management of saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers using different wells systems: a case study of the Nile Delta aquifer in Egypt

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: A study in the Nile Delta aquifer found that a combined well system of pumping, recharge and abstraction is more effective in controlling saltwater intrusion compared to individual measures. Increasing recharge was shown to have a greater impact on slowing down saltwater intrusion, with a retardation percentage of 19.5% compared to decreasing pumping at 6.2% and abstraction of brackish water at 5.9%.

Characteristics of coastal aquifer contamination by seawater intrusion and anthropogenic activities in the coastal areas of the Bohai Sea, eastern China

Xingyong Xu et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study conducted in the coastal aquifer around the Bohai Sea in China identified the factors affecting groundwater chemistry, including seawater intrusion, water-rock interaction, and evaporation. It was found that saltwater intrusion is the main contributor to increasing salinity, followed by water-rock interaction, while specific ions like Ca and F are primarily sourced from mineral weathering. Additionally, human activities were found to be the primary cause of nitrate pollution in groundwater, with high fluorine levels attributed to the dissolution of minerals due to seawater intrusion.

Influence of seawater intrusion and heavy metals contamination on groundwater quality, Red Sea coast, Saudi Arabia

Fahad Alshehri et al.

Summary: Groundwater samples from the Al Qunfudhah region along the Red Sea coast, Saudi Arabia were collected to study the impact of seawater intrusion and heavy metal contamination. The analysis revealed that a significant portion of the groundwater samples exceeded WHO standards for drinking water, pointing to poor quality and unsuitability for consumption. Factors such as seawater intrusion, fault systems, and anthropogenic activities were found to be key contributors to the heavy metal concentrations in the groundwater.
