Changes in soil pH and mobility of heavy metals in contaminated soils

Alicja Kicinska et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that soil acidification significantly increases metal mobility, with the order of mobility being Cd > Zn > Pb. It emphasizes the importance of conducting extensive geochemical studies in areas heavily polluted by particularly toxic elements. High pH buffering capacity leads to a lower percentage increase of bioavailable pollutants as acidity increases.

Tin and Antimony as Soil Pollutants along Railway Lines-A Case Study from North-Western Croatia

Zvjezdana Stancic et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the extent and distribution patterns of antimony and tin contamination in soils along railway lines. The results showed significant enrichment of Sb and Sn in the soil samples, up to 87 and 33 times the median value for European soils, respectively. Bioavailable concentrations of Sb and Sn were relatively low compared to total concentrations. The distribution of Sb and Sn in soils near railway lines was influenced by factors such as functional use of the site, distance from the tracks, topography, age of the railway line, and soil properties. Rail transport was found to be a significant source of soil pollution with Sn and Sb, posing environmental risks to humans, agricultural production, and wildlife.

Concentrations of selected trace elements in surface soils near crossroads in the city of Bratislava (the Slovak Republic)

Edgar Hiller et al.

Summary: Road transport emissions introduce various trace elements into the environment, leading to soil contamination and enrichment with metals such as copper, lead, and zinc in roadside soils. The age of road intersections and traffic volume impact the accumulation of elements in soils, with stable isotopic ratios indicating a mixed natural-anthropogenic origin of lead in soils near roads.

Phytoaccumulation of heavy metals in native plants growing on soils in the Spreta river valley, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Senad Murtic et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the phytoremediation potential of eight native plant species on heavy metal polluted soils in the Spreta river valley. Results showed that the soil in the study area is contaminated with chromium and nickel, and identified Artemisia vulgaris and Trifolium repens as plants with high potential for heavy metal removal.

Development of a Hydrogeological Conceptual Model of the Varazdin Alluvial Aquifer

Igor Karlovic et al.

Summary: This study describes the conceptualization of the Varazdin aquifer and the development of a numerical model of groundwater flow and nitrate transport, highlighting important elements such as aquifer geometry, recharge, and boundary conditions. The 3D aquifer model revealed the composition of the Varazdin aquifer into three layers and the spatial and temporal distribution of water balance components. The results indicate the distribution of average annual precipitation and the behavior of the aquifer system, defining boundary conditions such as recharge areas and outflow boundaries.
