Antibacterial Activity and Epigenetic Remodeling of Essential Oils from Calabrian Aromatic Plants

Patrizia D'Aquila et al.

Summary: Essential oils extracted from aromatic plants have been found to have nutritional, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, and can be used as food preservatives. This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of essential oils from ten aromatic plants grown in Italy. The essential oils from Clinopodium nepeta, Origanum vulgare, and Foeniculum vulgare showed the strongest inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. Furthermore, it is possible that epigenetic modifications mediate the antibacterial activity of essential oils.

Natural and engineered precision antibiotics in the context of resistance

Chad W. Johnston et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are important weapons in the fight against infectious diseases, but the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics has negative effects on microbiome stability and pathogen resistance. Therefore, more selective alternatives are being investigated, similar to precision medicine in the field of oncology. Precision antibiotics with focused activities are emerging as a means of addressing infections without causing harm to microbiomes or promoting resistance. By revisiting overlooked antibacterials, antibiotic design principles derived from nature are providing scaffolds and targets for the development of pathogen-specific drugs. In this perspective, the biosynthetic and antibacterial mechanisms used to obtain these activities are summarized, and the potential of engineering approaches to develop precision antibiotics is discussed.
