Cellulose Nanofibers as Functional Biomaterial from Pineapple Stubbles via TEMPO Oxidation and Mechanical Process

Kenly Araya-Chavarria et al.

Summary: This study focused on isolating cellulose nanofibers from pineapple leaves through oxidation pretreatment and mechanical deconstruction, showcasing the potential to reduce the use of chemicals and energy in the production process. The resulting CNF showed desirable fibril lengths, widths, and electrostatic charges, but exhibited reduced thermal stability due to chemical modification processes. Such CNF from pineapple leaves could serve as a sustainable biomaterial for various applications.

A Photocatalytic System Composed of Benzimidazolium Aryloxide and Tetramethylpiperidine 1-Oxyl to Promote Desulfonylative α-Oxyamination Reactions of α-Sulfonylketones

Tsukasa Tanaka et al.

Summary: A new photocatalytic system has been developed for the desulfonylative alpha-oxyamination reactions of alpha-sulfonylketones. The system consists of benzimidazolium aryloxide betaines and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl, which act as visible light-absorbing electron donor photocatalysts and catalyst recycling agents, respectively. Detailed information about the system and the photocatalytic processes has been obtained through spectroscopy, electrochemical measurements, and density functional theory calculations.

A combination of aqueous counter collision and TEMPO-mediated oxidation for doubled carboxyl contents of α-chitin nanofibers

Wenbo Ye et al.

Summary: Carboxylated chitin nanofibers were successfully prepared through direct surface TEMPO-mediated oxidation, resulting in superior pH-responsive sol-gel transition properties. The combined use of aqueous counter collision and TEMPO-mediated oxidation improved oxidation efficiency of chitin nanofibers, while avoiding severe degradation caused by excessive oxidation. The chemical, crystalline structures and morphological properties of the nanofibers were evaluated, and hydrogels with improved storage modulus were successfully formed through gas phase coagulation process.
