Integration of First- and Second-generation Bioethanol Production from Beet molasses and Distillery Stillage After Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment

D. Mikulski et al.

Summary: The combination of waste distillery stillage and sugar-rich beet molasses for ethanol production showed promising results in increasing ethanol concentration and yield. However, attempts to use cellulases for hydrolysis to increase fermentable sugars were unsuccessful, leading to increased concentrations of ethyl acetate and other volatile by-products in the fermentation media. Further optimization of the cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis process is needed for efficient use of the raw material.

Tailored one-pot lignocellulose fractionation to maximize biorefinery toward controllable producing lignin nanoparticles and facilitating enzymatic hydrolysis

Cheng-Ye Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a tailored one-pot lignocellulose fractionation method was developed using ultrafast and recyclable microwave-assisted ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment. This method significantly reduced the recalcitrance of natural biomass, promoted the enzymatic saccharification of cellulose, and produced lignin nanoparticles. The delignification process during DES pretreatment was visually monitored. The glucose yield of the pretreated poplar reached 95.4%, which was 5.8 times higher than the control. The regenerated DES lignin exhibited nanosized lignin with controllable size and excellent antioxidant activity.

Comparison of dilute acid pretreatment of agave assisted by microwave versus ultrasound to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis

Leopoldo J. Rios-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: A comparison between microwave and ultrasound irradiations in the agave pretreatment showed that microwave-assisted pretreatment had higher hemicellulose removal and glucose yield, reducing process time and temperature compared to conventional heating.

Benzenesulfonic acid-based hydrotropic system for achieving lignocellulose separation and utilization under mild conditions

Maolin Dong et al.

Summary: This study introduces benzenesulfonic acid as a green hydrotrope for efficient lignocellulose conversion, resulting in high-value building materials and lignin nanoparticles. The method not only removes lignin effectively, but also improves enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency and reduces entangled lignocellulosic nanofibrils, presenting a promising and simple technology for lignocellulose separation and utilization under mild conditions.

Microwave-assisted alkali hydrolysis for cellulose isolation from wheat straw: Influence of reaction conditions and non-thermal effects of microwave

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that temperature had a more significant impact on the cellulose content in fiber, and microwave-assisted hydrolysis could significantly reduce reaction time and chemical costs compared to traditional heating hydrolysis. Extensive determination and characterization confirmed the existence of non-thermal effect of microwave assistance.

Thermochemical pretreatments of maize stem for sugar recovery: Comparative evaluation of microwave and conventional heating

Zongyuan Zhu et al.

Summary: The study showed that microwave thermochemical pretreatment is more efficient than conventional heating pretreatment in releasing sugars and removing lignin from maize stem biomass. Microwave was able to rapidly remove lignin, while conventional heating was better at removing hemicellulose and converting cellulose.

Impact of Lignocellulose Pretreatment By-Products on S. cerevisiae Strain Ethanol Red Metabolism during Aerobic and An-aerobic Growth

Grzegorz Klosowski et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the specific cellular response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Ethanol Red strain to stress caused by toxic by-products during the pretreatment of lignocellulose. Results showed that yeast cells overproduced ergosterol and trehalose in the presence of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural under aerobic conditions, while a decrease in the biosynthesis of these indicators was observed under anaerobic conditions. Yeast strain was able to completely metabolize 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, syringaldehyde, and vanillin, with overproduction of Hsp60 in response to furan aldehydes.

Increased mixing intensity is not necessary for more efficient cellulose hydrolysis at high solid loading

Xiaoxiao Jiang et al.

Summary: Increase in mixing intensity is not essential for efficient cellulose hydrolysis at higher solid loadings; a lower mixing intensity is actually needed for higher cellulose conversion. Mixing at the initial stage is crucial, while continuous mixing throughout the hydrolysis process is not necessary for improved efficiency.
