A novel pathogenicity determinant hijacks maize catalase 1 to enhance viral multiplication and infection

Zhiyuan Jiao et al.

Summary: The P31 protein of Maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) is crucial for viral accumulation and symptom development, interacting with maize catalases to inhibit expression of salicylic acid-responsive genes and induce systemic chlorosis and necrosis. Silencing of maize catalases facilitates MCMV RNA and coat protein accumulation, highlighting the important role of P31 in counteracting host defense mechanisms during infection.

The Botrytis cinerea Crh1 transglycosylase is a cytoplasmic effector triggering plant cell death and defense response

Kai Bi et al.

Summary: Crh proteins catalyze crosslinking of chitin and glucan polymers in fungal cell walls. Bi et al. showed that a Crh protein from the phytopathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea acts as a cytoplasmic effector and elicitor of plant defense, leading to reduced sensitivity to the pathogen in plants expressing this gene.
