Imidazole-based ionic liquid was immobilized on polymer support and proven successful by various characterizations. The supported ionic liquid showed high adsorption capacity and excellent cyclic stability in the separation of vanadium (V) from a vanadium-containing solution.
Imidazole-based ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride was immobilized on polymer support by chemical grafting and utilized to separate vanadium (V) from a vanadium-containing solution. Characterizations with elementary analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) proved the successful loading of the ionic liquid on the surface of the support. The adsorption capacity toward V(V) reached 222.42 mg/g under experimental conditions, which was significantly higher than that of the main impurity ions Fe(III) and Al(III). The adsorption capacity was maintained at 93.52% of the original value after 15 cycles, demonstrating the excellent cyclic stability of the supported ionic liquid.
