Evaluation of SARS-COV-2 transmission and infection in airliner cabins

Wensi Wang et al.

Summary: Commercial airliners have played a significant role in the global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Using computational fluid dynamics, this study simulated the transmission of the virus on two flights. The results suggest that wearing masks and reducing conversation frequency can help mitigate the risk of exposure to the virus.

Detection of the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of SARS-CoV-2 in aircraft wastewater

Warish Ahmed et al.

Summary: The newly detected Omicron variant has been designated as a Variant of Concern by the WHO. Its genome contains more than 50 mutations, which are associated with increased transmissibility, differing disease severity, and potential immune evasion. The Omicron variant was detected in aircraft wastewater, confirming its presence in an infected passenger and highlighting the importance of aircraft wastewater as a surveillance point for infectious diseases.

Airplane boarding methods that reduce risk from COVID-19

R. John Milne et al.

Summary: Airlines have implemented practices to reduce the risk of passenger infection with COVID-19, including blocking middle seats and introducing new boarding methods. The study evaluates eight boarding methods based on health and operational metrics, providing recommendations for airlines based on their priorities for health and boarding efficiency.

Proximity to international airports and early transmission of COVID-19 in the United States-An epidemiological assessment of the geographic distribution of 490,000 cases

Aastha Chokshi et al.

Summary: The study found that counties in the US containing international airports were hotspots for Covid-19 transmission in the early stages of the pandemic, with air traffic significantly correlated with Covid-19 cases while population density was not significantly correlated. Early public health containment efforts focused on these areas may help mitigate disease transmission during future similar novel respiratory virus epidemics.

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 associated with aircraft travel: a systematic review

Elena C. Rosca et al.

Summary: The review aimed to evaluate data on SARS-CoV-2 transmission aboard aircraft, highlighting the potential spread during air travel. Findings from 18 studies suggest the virus can be transmitted during flights, but the variation in study design and methodology hinders conclusive assessment. Standardized guidelines for future research are needed to facilitate comparison of results across studies.
