Voltammetric determination of Salmonella typhimurium in minced beef meat using a chip-based imprinted sensor

Shaimaa A. Khalid et al.

Summary: In this study, a bacterial imprinted polymer-based biosensor was developed for rapid and selective detection of Salmonella typhimurium. The biosensor exhibited high sensitivity and specificity towards the target pathogen and showed no interference signals when tested with other non-targeted pathogens. The biosensor also demonstrated the capability to directly detect the pathogen in minced beef meat samples, eliminating the need for bacterial enrichment steps.

Microbial Sensing and Removal of Heavy Metals: Bioelectrochemical Detection and Removal of Chromium(VI) and Cadmium(II)

Reham A. Alfadaly et al.

Summary: Inorganic pollutants like Cadmium(II) and Chromium(VI) pose a threat to the environment and ecosystem, and microbial technology is being utilized to combat this issue. The study found that Rhizobium-MAP7 had strong resistance to heavy metals and bioelectrochemical measurements were effective in assessing susceptibility and resistivity. Using these findings, detection and removal of heavy metals is highly supported, especially with the use of Rhizobium-MAP7.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
