General and custom deep learning autosegmentation models for organs in head and neck, abdomen, and male pelvis

Asma Amjad et al.

Summary: In this study, general and custom autosegmentation models were developed and evaluated for reducing workload and inconsistencies in organ segmentation for radiation treatment planning. The models, based on deep convolutional neural networks, achieved high accuracy using either diversified multi-institutional datasets or well-controlled single-institution datasets. Organ-based approaches were implemented to improve segmentation accuracy for small or complex organs. The autosegmentation models significantly reduced contouring time compared to manual contouring methods.

Clinical Evaluation of Deep Learning and Atlas-Based Auto-Contouring of Bladder and Rectum for Prostate Radiation Therapy

W. Jeffrey Zabel et al.

Summary: Auto-contouring can reduce workload, interobserver variation, and time associated with manual contouring. Using deep-learning auto-contouring for bladder and rectum contour generation reduced contouring time without negatively affecting editing times, contour geometry, or clinically relevant dose-volume metrics. This study contributes to the evidence that deep-learning methods are a viable solution for organ-at-risk contouring in radiation therapy.

Summary: The study investigated automatic segmentation of medical images using deep learning algorithms, aiming to determine the consistency and impact of physician styles on treatment outcomes. Results showed that physician styles are learnable and do not significantly affect treatment outcomes. A physician style-aware segmentation network was developed to improve segmentation accuracy.

Clinical implementation of deep learning contour autosegmentation for prostate radiotherapy

Elaine Cha et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinical utility of deep learning-based autosegmentation for MR-based prostate radiotherapy planning, finding that this technology improved efficiency, although some autocontours still required major clinically significant edits. Geometric indices correlated weakly with contouring time, but had no relationship with quality scores.

Summary: This work investigates the issue of algorithms' data hungriness in Machine Learning, providing a comprehensive review of existing data-efficient methods categorized into four groups. These methods include using unsupervised algorithms, creating more data, transferring knowledge between domains, and modifying data-hungry algorithms. The interplay between these strategies is emphasized to explore more robust and data-efficient algorithms, while also discussing limitations, research challenges, and future opportunities in advancing data efficiency in machine learning.
