Deformation behaviour of TWIP steels: Constitutive modelling informed by local and integral experimental methods used in concert

S. Martin et al.

Summary: This article explores the microstructural evolution and deformation mechanisms of high-alloy austenitic steel, demonstrating the impact of twin nucleation process on the strain hardening behavior. Experimental data and model predictions provide insights into the enhanced plasticity of the steel, with general guidelines for austenitic steel design established based on the findings.

Stored and dissipated energy of plastic deformation revisited from the viewpoint of dislocation kinetics modelling approach

A. Sendrowicz et al.

Summary: This study revisits the classical topic of elastic energy storage during strain hardening of metals from the perspective of an analytically tractable thermodynamic modelling framework. The model's versatility has been extended to predict energy partitioning during plastic flow. The obtained analytical solutions demonstrate good predictive capability and can be applied to other metals.

In situ characterization of the functional degradation of a [001] orientated Fe-Mn-Al-Ni single crystal under compression using acoustic emission measurements

Anja Weidner et al.

Summary: AE measurements during cyclic compressive loading on a Fe-Mn-Al-Ni shape memory alloy single crystal revealed two categories of AE signals related to two underlying mechanisms, showing asymmetry in AE activity during forward and reverse transformations. An unexpected high AE activity was observed during superelastic unloading of martensitic microstructure, attributed to reverse transformation and dislocation effects.

Summary: The proposed research aims to enhance the capability of mechanical testing by combining various contemporary techniques. By studying deformation and fracture processes at different scales, the research provides feedback for the development of new non-destructive testing methods and in-situ monitoring techniques.
