Evading the strength-ductility trade-off at room temperature and achieving ultrahigh plasticity at 800°C in a TiAl alloy

Guoming Zheng et al.

Summary: This study developed two new microstructures, T-T and T-D structures, in the Ti-43.5Al-4Nb-1Mo-0.18 (TNM) alloy, which significantly improved the alloy's strength and ductility. The formation of deformation twins and the promotion of dynamic recrystallization were found to play important roles in enhancing the plasticity at both room temperature and elevated temperatures.

Jianglei Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the lamellar orientation control and mechanical properties of directionally solidified Ti-49Al alloy in oxide ceramic crucible. By selecting feasible solidification parameters based on nucleation undercooling theory, DS Ti-49Al with paralleled lamellar orientation was successfully prepared. The alloy showed improved mechanical properties, with specimens exhibiting paralleled lamellar orientation having higher tensile strength and elongation compared to equiaxed grain structures.

Zhiping Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, the transformation behavior from the α phase to γ lamellae in γ-TiAl alloys during the cooling process was investigated using high-temperature laser scanning confocal microscopy (HTLSCM). The nucleation and growth behaviors of γ lamellae were studied at moderate cooling rates, and the effect of cooling rate on the hardness of the alloys was also examined.

Crystallographic Origin of Phase Transformation and Lamellar Orientation Control for TiAl-Based Alloys

Gong Zheng et al.

Summary: TiAl intermetallics are metallic materials with complex solid-state phase transformations and difficult-to-control crystal orientations. However, controlling lamellar orientation is crucial for the development of TiAl-based alloys in jet engines and other high-temperature systems. This study investigated the relationship between lamellar structure and phase transformation process, and determined the crystallographic origin for controlling lamellar orientations.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-45Al-2W-xC alloys

Kateryna Kamyshnykova et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of five alloys with varying carbon content were studied. The alloys were prepared by vacuum induction melting and centrifugal casting, followed by hot isostatic pressing and heat treatment. The microstructure of the heat-treated alloys consists of alpha 2 + gamma lamellar grains and gamma grain boundaries. Carbon content affects the interlamellar spacing and Vickers microhardness. Some alloys show improved creep resistance at high temperatures.

Atomic-scale investigation on the interface structure of {2(2)over-bar01} α2-Ti3Al deformation twins in polysynthetically twinned TiAl single crystals

Neng He et al.

Summary: The interface structure of {2 (2) over bar 01} alpha(2)-Ti3Al deformation twins formed during tensile deformation of poly synthetically twinned (PST) TiAl single crystals at 900 degrees C was systematically studied by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the basal-plane SISFs formed in alpha(2) twins cannot be attributed to the glide of Shockley superpartial dislocations, but are caused by complex atomic shuffle and interchange shuffling. Additionally, basal-plane antiphase boundaries (APB) are formed near the tips of alpha(2) twins to relieve stress concentration.

Interlamellar boundaries govern cracking

Shitan Yan et al.

Summary: In contrast to previous studies on cracking behaviors in lamellar materials, a new phenomenon has been discovered in PST TiAl single crystals showing that specimens with crack divider have higher toughness than those with crack arrester. This difference is attributed to the coherency of interlamellar boundaries, where coherent boundaries suppress delamination and promote crack propagation in a different direction. The study introduces a toughness ratio to evaluate cracking behavior based on boundary coherency levels, shedding light on the relationship between interlamellar boundaries and crack propagation for the development of lamellar materials.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and directionally solidified large size Ti-45Al-8Nb alloys by electromagnetic confinement

Xiao'an Yue et al.

Summary: Directionally solidified Ti-45Al-8Nb alloys exhibit improved microstructure and high-temperature mechanical properties, such as increased volume fraction of α2 phase, more uniform lamellar spacing, enhanced room temperature fracture toughness, and higher high-temperature tensile strength. The transition from intergranular fracture to translamellar fracture suggests a change in the fracture mode with directional solidification.
