In situ observation of solidification velocity and refined structure transformation in nonequilibrium solidification of highly undercooled and single-phase alloys

Yukang An et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between critical undercooling ΔT* and nonequilibrium solidification velocity of single-phase alloys, as well as the mechanism of refined structure transformation, were fully investigated. The results showed that higher solidification velocity resulted in more solid phase production during recalescence, leading to greater stress accumulation and increased likelihood of grain refinement. Refined structures at high undercooling exhibited higher misorientation, Sigma(3) twin boundaries, and high-angle grain boundaries, indicating recrystallization in microstructures. Increasing ΔT led to rapid increase in accumulated stress and plastic strains during recalescence. However, when ΔT exceeded the critical undercooling ΔT*, the strain degree and hardness suddenly decreased, indicating the disappearance of accumulated stress and plastic strains due to the driving force of the system during the post-recalescence period and recrystallization in microstructures. The results fully demonstrated that stress-induced recrystallization caused the refined structure transformation at high undercooling.

Columnar to equiaxed transition in additively manufactured CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy

Hongge Li et al.

Summary: A single-track CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy was prepared by laser melting deposition, with the microstructural evolution of columnar to equiaxed transition observed experimentally. A solidification map was established combining experimental observations and numerical simulations to quantitatively reveal the underlying correlation between solidification parameters and microstructural morphology. During the laser melting deposition process, a decrease in the ratio of gradient temperature to solidification rate induced columnar to equiaxed transition, which could have implications on the production of bulk components with the desired microstructure and high performance.

Hybrid additive manufacturing of Inconel 718 for future space applications

M. Godec et al.

Summary: The hybrid fabrication process of Inconel 718 test parts using SLM and DED technologies was analyzed in detail, with a focus on ensuring mechanical property consistency and evaluating microstructures and mechanical properties to understand property-controlling mechanisms. A custom solution treatment and aging method was introduced to dissolve the Laves phase present in DED parts, which improved mechanical properties. Good bonding between SLM and DED parts, along with prevention of delta-phase precipitation in the DED process, are essential for producing high-value metallic products for space applications through hybrid AM.

Effects of Cell Network Structure on the Strength of Additively Manufactured Stainless Steels

Jung Gi Kim et al.

Summary: The rapid melting and solidification cycle in additive manufacturing creates metastable microstructures that contribute to the strength of additively manufactured alloys. The role of dislocation cell structure on the mechanical property of additively manufactured stainless steels was investigated. The finer cell networks found in the 304L stainless steels induced more interactions with dislocations, leading to higher strength during tensile test.

Microstructural evolution and anisotropic mechanical properties of Inconel 625 superalloy fabricated by directed energy deposition

Yunlong Hu et al.

Summary: The microstructure and anisotropy of mechanical properties in Inconel 625 superalloy prepared by directed energy deposition were studied, revealing significant differences in tensile properties and fatigue crack growth behavior between horizontal and vertical samples due to the anisotropic microstructure. The horizontal sample showed higher yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, as well as lower fatigue crack growth rate, but lower elongation compared to the vertical sample.
