Enhanced ductility of Ti3AlC2 particles reinforced pure aluminum composites by interface control

Zhijun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, TiAl3 whiskers were successfully in-situ formed at the interface of Ti3AlC2 particles reinforced pure aluminum composites through spark plasma sintering, with the size and content of TiAl3 whiskers controlled by changing the preparation temperature. The formation of TiAl3 phase at the interface was found to effectively improve the mechanical properties of the composites, especially when fabricated at 620 degrees C, where the average diameter of TiAl3 whiskers was 79 nm and the elongation of the composite reached 17.5%.

Functionally graded laminated composites fabricated from MAX-phase filled preceramic papers: Microstructure, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance

E. B. Kashkarov et al.

Summary: This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of novel functionally graded materials (FGMs) based on Ti3(Si,Al)C2 MAX phase derived from preceramic paper. The FGMs exhibit high flexural strength and corrosion resistance, which are influenced by microstructure, composition, and architecture. The results suggest that the texturing of MAX phase grains and the composition gradient in FGMs contribute to their anisotropic hardness and improved corrosion resistance.

High plasticity achieved by spark plasma sintering method in aluminum matrix composites reinforced with Ti2AlC particles

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: Ti2AlC/Al composites with 20 vol% Ti2AlC particles were fabricated using spark plasma sintering and hot extrusion, showing high tensile ductility at 590°C sintering temperature due to the good interfacial bonding and uniform strain distribution. The ability of Ti2AlC layered structure to kink and delaminate also contributes to the high plasticity.

Preparation and characteristics of Ti3AlC2 -Al3Ti/Al composite materials synthesized from pure Al and Ti3AlC2 powders

Yuanbo Wang et al.

Summary: A novel Ti3AlC2-Al3Ti/Al composite was fabricated by hot pressing Ti3AlC2 and pure Al powders, forming a strong interfacial bonding. The mechanical properties of the composite were significantly enhanced, mainly attributed to load transfer strengthening, thermal mismatch strengthening, and dispersion strengthening mechanisms.
