Competitive mechanisms occurring during quenching and partitioning of three silicon variants of 0.4 wt.% carbon steels

Ilkka Miettunen et al.

Summary: Traditional quenching and partitioning (Q&P) treated steels are usually alloyed with silicon (Si) but the exact role of Si in microstructural mechanisms during partitioning process is not fully understood. This study combines dilatometric analysis with detailed microstructural characterization to reveal competing mechanisms during partitioning. Three 0.4 wt.% carbon steels with varying Si contents were quenched and partitioned at different temperatures, showing that Si content affects bainitic transformation, austenite retention, and carbide precipitation. Silicon retards austenite decomposition at higher temperatures but does not improve carbon partitioning at lower temperatures.

Correlation between mechanical stability and hardness of austenite in martensite/austenite mixtures

Javad Mola et al.

Summary: The hardness of austenite in Fe-1.5%Mn-(0.44-1.46)%C steels was estimated through an extrapolation procedure, showing non-linear variations with carbon concentration and maximum hardness at intermediate carbon concentrations. This behavior was explained by the influence of carbon on the mechanical stability of austenite and hardness of martensite.

Lean duplex TRIP steel: Role of ferrite in the texture development, plastic anisotropy, martensitic transformation kinetics, and stress partitioning

Peijun Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the constitutive micromechanical behavior of transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) stainless steel alloys using advanced techniques. The effects of chemical composition, microstructure, and texture on plastic anisotropy and martensitic transformation kinetics were examined, revealing the critical role of stress partitioning among constituent phases and martensitic phase transformation in determining plastic deformation micromechanics. Additionally, the study showed that the introduction of a load-sharing ferrite phase in cost-effective lean duplex TRIP alloy can reduce tensile residual stress concentration in the martensite phase, potentially improving the formability of high-strength TRIP steels.
