Point defect model for passivity breakdown on hyper-duplex stainless steel 2707 in solutions containing bromide at different temperatures

Li Sun et al.

Summary: Passivity breakdown on HDSS 2707 has been studied and interpreted using the Point Defect Model. Pitting parameters of HDSS 2707, such as polarizability at bl/s interface, defect annihilation rate, and defect diffusion coefficient, have been determined. The breakdown potential is shown to have linear relationships with log [Br-], pH, and the square root of potential scan rate (v1/2), following a near-normal distribution. The critical vacancy concentration calculated from the PDM aligns with crystallographic estimates from the chromic barrier layer, and the dominant point defect is confirmed through Mott-Schottky measurements.

Failure analysis of anion synergy on pitting behavior of liner 316L in sour water system by electrochemical tests

Kuijiao Li et al.

Summary: Electrochemical tests were conducted to investigate the synergistic effects of chloride, sulfate, and carbonate ions on pitting. The results revealed that sulfate ions initially increased the pitting potential of 316L, reaching a peak at 0.2 M concentration, before decreasing. At this concentration, the highest critical pitting temperature, breakdown potential, and maximum impedance were obtained. On the other hand, carbonate ions increased the pitting potential but accelerated the general corrosion of the 316L surface. The study proposed an effective adsorption area based on the competitive adsorption mechanism to explain the pitting and passivation behaviors of 316L, and comprehensively analyzed the properties of the passive film.

Failure analysis and experimental verification on the hydrogen-driven pitting corrosion of heat exchanger tube material

Dong Liu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally analyzed and verified the effect of hydrogen on the failure of heat exchanger tube material. The results showed that hydrogen significantly decreased the charge transfer resistance and the pitting potential, while increasing the densities of point defects in the passive film. This increased the pitting corrosion susceptibility and weakened the corrosion resistance of the material during hydrocracking, leading to failure.

Pitting of carbon steel in the synthetic concrete pore solution

Digby D. Macdonald et al.

Summary: Pitting corrosion is a possible mode of failure of the carbon steel overpack in the Belgian supercontainer concept for the isolation of high-level nuclear waste. Stabilization via differential aeration produces a potentially damaging, stable pit. However, analysis of experimental data and mechanistic research suggest that failure of the carbon steel overpack containing high-level nuclear waste over a storage horizon of 100,000 years is improbable.

Localized corrosion: Passive film breakdown vs. Pit growth stability, Part VI: Pit dissolution kinetics of different alloys and a model for pitting and repassivation potentials

Tianshu Li et al.

Summary: The study found a correlation between idiss, max and pitting and repassivation potentials, with lower idiss, max correlating with higher pitting and repassivation potentials. A conceptual model based on a recently proposed pitting framework was established to discuss the effect of idiss, max on pitting resistance.

Corrosion of rebar in concrete. Part IV. On the theoretical basis of the chloride threshold

Digby D. Macdonald et al.

Summary: The theory developed calculates the chloride threshold (CT) using the Point Defect Model (PDM), with CT defined as the ratio [Cl- ]/[OH- ] where passivity breakdown voltage (Eb) equals corrosion potential, ECP. CT is sensitive to temperature, ECP, pH, and Eb, emphasizing the need for accurate data. The theory is demonstrated by successfully calculating CT for selected systems.
