Interfacial and mechanical properties of continuous ramie fiber reinforced biocomposites fabricated by in-situ impregnated 3D printing

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the mechanical properties and interfacial analysis of 3D printed continuous vegetal fiber reinforced biomass based composites. The results showed that the mechanical behaviors of the biocomposites were influenced by the interfacial properties between deposited layers and between fiber/matrix interfaces. By controlling the printing parameters, significant microstructure changes were observed in the biocomposites, leading to the highest tensile strength found at specific printing conditions.

3D printing of lightweight, super-strong yet fl exible all-cellulose structure

Summary: Lightweight and super-strong honeycomb structures are constructed using 3D printing of all-cellulose ink, demonstrating switchable high elasticity in the wet state and high rigidity in the dry state. The superb printing and mechanical properties are attributed to controlled dissolution and regeneration of cellulose, as well as shear-induced cellulose alignment during printing. Additionally, the all-cellulose honeycomb structure shows good thermal insulation properties after filling with cellulose nanofibrils aerogel.

These properties make cellulose nanomaterials valuable rheological modifiers in fluid-based applications.

Role of in situ added cellulose nanocrystals as rheological modulator of novel waterborne polyurethane urea for 3D-printing technology

Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals have been studied as rheological modulator to improve the printing performance of a novel polyurethane ink. The relationship between rheological properties of the inks and their printing viability has been established. Mechanical and thermomechanical properties of printed pieces with CNC showed effective reinforcement and increased shape fidelity due to filler effect, resulting in inks with excellent printable properties.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has been used to fabricate 3D aerogels with customized geometries specific to their applications, showing great promise in various fields such as tissue engineering, electrochemical energy storage, controlled drug delivery, sensing, and soft robotics. Postprinting processes are addressed to achieve desired properties like porosity and mechanical strength through drying and postdrying treatments.

Interfacial Transcrystallization and Mechanical Performance of 3D-Printed Fully Recyclable Continuous Fiber Self-Reinforced Composites

Summary: This study proposes a method for fabricating continuous fiber self-reinforced composites by 3D printing, with experimental results showing the influence of printing temperature on mechanical properties. The Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength were 8.2 GPa and 300.2 MPa respectively, with transcrystallization leading to an interface between fibers and the matrix. The recyclability of the 3D-printed CFSRCs was also demonstrated for potential applications in green composites.

Development of Bioinspired Functional Chitosan/Cellulose Nanofiber 3D Hydrogel Constructs by 3D Printing for Application in the Engineering of Mechanically Demanding Tissues

Summary: In this study, 3D printed hydrogel constructs were developed using chitosan and cellulose nanofibers without chemical modification or crosslinking, leading to environmentally friendly high mechanical performance composites. Chitosan promoted cell growth with balanced hydrophilic properties, while nanofibers provided mechanical reinforcement to the hydrogel. The optimized composition and processing parameters resulted in good 3D printability, resolution, and quality of constructs, expanding the library of biopolymer compositions for mechanically performant hydrogel constructs.
