The influence of chemistry on the interface toughness in a WTi-Cu system

Markus Alfreider et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interfacial fracture characteristic of a WTi-Cu system commonly found in the microelectronics industry, revealing a significant reduction in interface cohesion due to oxygen accumulation and the transition mechanism from plasticity to fracture processes.

Flaw-insensitive fracture of a micrometer-sized brittle metallic glass

Ruitao Qu et al.

Summary: This study discovered the strongest metallic alloy known, which is flaw-insensitive at the micrometer scale and exhibits properties that deviate from traditional theories. The experimental results show that the fracture toughness of this ultra-strong glassy alloy increases with increasing sample size.

Mode dependent evaluation of fracture behaviour using cantilever bending

Nidhin George Mathews et al.

Summary: This study assesses the geometric factors affecting stress intensity factor solutions of a single edge notched cantilever bend specimen in different loading modes to propose suitable testing standards. The variation in stress intensity factor and mode mixity as a function of crack position, beam cross-section, crack geometry, arm length of the cantilever, and loading direction is analyzed to understand the contributions of different loading states and boundary conditions. Mode I predominates for beams with length to width ratios above 4, while mode II and mode III predominate for shorter beams of length to width ratio of 0.5 during cantilever bending.
