Optimal Morphometric Characteristics of a Tubular Polymeric Scaffold to Promote Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: A Scoping Review

Josefa Alarcon Apablaza et al.

Summary: This scoping review summarizes the adequate quantitative/morphometric parameters of polymeric nerve guide conduits (NGCs) that provide a supportive environment for nerve regeneration. Optimal morphometric characteristics, such as wall thickness, fiber size, pore size, and porosity, are identified to enhance nerve regeneration and reduce the need for experimental studies.

Summary: The study illustrates that nerve conduits with micro-grooved inner textures significantly improve peripheral nerve regeneration, leading to enhanced nerve tissue repair efficiency. These conduits show similar repair capacity to autografts, demonstrating the potential for improved nerve tissue engineering strategies.

Effect of bore fluid composition on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) hollow fiber membranes fabricated by dry-jet wet spinning

Xixia Liu et al.

Summary: PLGA HFMs fabricated with different DMSO contents in bore fluid showed significant changes in morphology and performance, with higher DMSO content resulting in smaller dimensions but increased porosity. In vitro cell culture experiments indicated that HFMs prepared with 60% DMSO bore fluid exhibited enhanced cell adhesion and neurite outgrowth alignment along the HFM longitudinal axis. This study provides insights into the mechanism of HFM porous morphology formation and its potential applications in tissue engineering.

Immediate Intraoperative Repair of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve in Thyroid Surgery

Ricard Simo et al.

Summary: Immediate intraoperative repair of the RLN during thyroid surgery can be achieved through various methods such as direct end-to-end anastomosis, nerve grafting, or anastomosis with other nerves. Techniques include micro-suturing and the use of fibrin glue. It is important to repair the RLN promptly to maintain vocal cord tone, achieve better voice recovery, and prevent aspiration.
