Dynamic mesoscale cracking modeling of energetic composite materials in Hopkinson bar test

Rui Liu et al.

Summary: This paper develops a dynamic mesoscale viscoelastic model to simulate the center splitting phenomenon of Octahydro-1,3,5,7-Tetranitro-Tetrazocine-based ECM Brazilian disc under dynamic loadings. The microcrack evolution is fully considered, with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion driving crack propagation. Details of cracking under different loading conditions are analyzed, as well as the influence of precrack conditions and failure criteria on dynamic cracking formation. Additionally, heterogeneous failure surfaces are considered and compared with unique failure surface conditions.

Multi-scale modeling of shock initiation of a pressed energetic material I: The effect of void shapes on energy localization

Yen Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impact of void shapes on meso-scale energy deposition rates by analyzing and simulating real void shapes of energetic materials. The results show that while parameterizing complex void morphologies can fairly accurately predict reaction rates, the intricate details of highly complex void shapes significantly affect hotspot characteristics.

High-strain-rate mechanical response of HTPE propellant under SHPB impact loading

Heng-ning Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a modified apparatus to research the stress-strain behavior of HTPE propellant under high-speed loading, revealing a correlation between the failure mode and mechanical response of the propellant. With the assistance of high-speed digital camera and scanning electron microscopy, the microscopic failure mechanism and characteristic failure modes of the HTPE propellant were investigated. Based on the stress-strain plots derived from the tests, it was found that the ultimate stress, strain energy density, and adiabatic temperature-rise effect of the HTPE propellant showed strong strain rate dependence.

Sensitization and desensitization of PBXs stemming from microcrack and microvoid in responses to pressure-time loading

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: The formation of hotspots is crucial for the ignition of PBXs, with crack hotspots dominating under low pressure conditions and void hotspots under high pressure conditions. Pre-impacts can alter the characteristics of hotspots, such as expanding the range of crack hotspots and reducing the range of void hotspots.

Probabilistic effects of porosity and chemical kinetics on the shock initiation of an octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) based explosive

Christopher M. Miller et al.

Summary: The study investigates the shock initiation of an HMX-based explosive due to thin flyer impact, using mesoscale simulations to generate microstructural samples and comparing the shock response with experiments. A modified Arrhenius-based chemical kinetics model is employed, along with a simplified shock initiation criterion based on cross-sectional temperature profiles. An inverse correlation is found between shock pressure and the confidence interval of the experimental threshold velocity.

Numerical simulation study of composite solid propellant small scale gap test

Hong-fu Qiang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the sensitivity characteristics of composite solid propellants under shock waves using small scale gap tests. Theoretical and numerical models are established to calculate detonation and shock wave parameters, verifying the reliability of the method and providing theoretical support for predicting and safely using high-energy composite solid propellants.
