Fish consumption is an indicator of exposure to non-dioxin like polychlorinated biphenyls in cumulative risk assessments based on a probabilistic and sensitive approach

Ching-Chang Lee et al.

Summary: The study investigated the levels of total PCBs, NDL-PCBs, and ICES-6 PCBs in commonly consumed foods in Taiwan, and estimated the cumulative health risks of NDL-PCB consumption. The results showed that ICES-6 PCBs were below EU maximum levels in all tested food samples, with fish intake and concentration being the most sensitive factors for 3-6-year-olds.

Assessment of the conservation status of Chondrichthyans: underestimation of the pollution threat

G. Consales et al.

Summary: Cartilaginous fish, including sharks, rays, and chimaeras, are facing threats such as overfishing and pollution. There is a lack of information regarding anthropogenic contamination for these species, with only a small number of species considered to be facing pollution threats according to the IUCN Red List assessment. Urgent updates on the conservation status of these species are needed, along with further research on the effects of contaminants on Chondrichthyans.

Additional Pressure to a Threatened Species: High Persistent Organic Pollutant Concentrations in the Tropical Estuarine Batoid Gymnura altavela

L. G. Paiva et al.

Summary: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), mainly PCBs, were found in Gymnura altavela liver samples from the highly impacted Guanabara Bay in the Atlantic Ocean, with high concentrations suggesting potential conservation pressure on the threatened batoid species. The prevalence of industrial compounds was highlighted by a low sigma DDT/sigma PCB ratio, indicating lower recent DDT input in the estuary. A negative correlation between disc width and concentrations of certain POPs suggests a potential impact of maternal offloading on the species.
