Heavy metal transport driven by seawater-freshwater interface dynamics: The role of colloid mobilization and aquifer pore structure change

Bo Tan et al.

Summary: This study simulated the dynamics of the seawater-freshwater interface and the related mobilization of colloids and changes in aquifer pore structure in relation to heavy metal transport. The results showed that different mechanisms were involved in the release of heavy metals at different stages, with colloids playing a significant role in their transport.

Observations of turbulent mixing and vertical diffusive salt flux in the Changjiang Diluted Water

Baisu Zhu et al.

Summary: Based on microstructure measurements from a repeated sampling station southwest of the Jeju Island during summer, this study investigated the hydrography, pycnocline turbulence, and vertical salt flux in the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW). The findings suggest that pycnocline turbulence plays a significant role in influencing the vertical diffusion and other properties of CDW.

Cd transfers during marine sediment resuspension over short and long-term period: Associated risk for coastal water quality

Nicolas Layglon et al.

Summary: This study compares the kinetics of cadmium remobilization and the amplitude of its transfers with different marine sediments. The results show that the process of cadmium re-dissolution is highly reproducible. The intensity of sediment resuspension impacts the amplitude of cadmium remobilization, potentially exceeding the maximum allowable cadmium concentration set by the European Union Water Framework Directive.

Behaviour and distribution of arsenic in seawater and suspended particulate matter in the adjacent area of the Changjiang Estuary during summer and autumn

Shuai Yuan et al.

Summary: The distribution and partitioning of arsenic in the Changjiang Estuary and its adjacent areas during summer and autumn were strongly influenced by riverine input and water masses from the East China Sea, displaying significant seasonal variations. Arsenic concentrations showed a decreasing trend from inshore to offshore, while PAs concentrations were positively correlated with SPM and turbidity.

Southward spreading of the Changjiang Diluted Water in the La Nina spring of 2008

Chen-Tung Arthur Chen et al.

Summary: The strong La Nina phenomenon in 2007/2008 caused the cold, nutrient-rich Changjiang Diluted Water to flow southwards in the fall, providing a significant source of nutrients, especially nitrogen, to the South China Sea. By April 2008, even when the winter monsoon had weakened, the presence of the Changjiang Diluted Water was still clearly visible.

Occurrence, partition, and risk of seven heavy metals in sediments, seawater, and organisms from the eastern sea area of Shandong Peninsula, Yellow Sea, China

Rui Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that heavy metals in the marine ecosystem of the eastern sea area of Shandong Peninsula in China mainly come from terrestrial sources, with higher concentrations in sediments and seawater. Concentrations of heavy metals in mollusc were generally higher and poses potential risks.

Release of particles and metals into seawater following sediment resuspension of a coastal mine tailings disposal off Portman Bay, Southern Spain

Francois Bourrin et al.

Summary: The experiment in Portman Bay revealed that anthropogenic disturbances can lead to the resuspension of mine tailings, potentially impacting marine ecosystems. Observations on metal behavior in resuspended particles could be extrapolated to seafloor mining activities.
