Spawning phenology of a rapidly shifting marine fish species throughout its range

Emily Slesinger et al.

Summary: Ocean warming is causing fish species to shift their ranges poleward, impacting the spawning phenology and reproductive output of black sea bass populations in different distributional ranges. Results show that northern populations of black sea bass have shorter spawning seasons and lower reproductive output compared to populations in their historic range.

Anomalous collapses of Nares Strait ice arches leads to enhanced export of Arctic sea ice

Summary: Ice arches at the northern and southern ends of Nares Strait, a key passage in the Arctic, are forming for shorter durations, leading to increased ice transport and accelerating the export of multi-year ice.

Heatwave-induced synchrony within forage fish portfolio disrupts energy flow to top pelagic predators

Mayumi L. Arimitsu et al.

Summary: During the Pacific marine heatwave of 2014-2016, key forage fish species in the Gulf of Alaska experienced reduced abundance and quality, leading to trophic instability within the system. Despite compensatory changes in age structure, size, growth or energy content of forage fish, none were able to fully mitigate the adverse impacts of the heatwave. Changes in zooplankton communities and the impact on the forage fish community led to disruptions in the normal pelagic food web, causing shifts in distribution, mass mortalities, and reproductive failures among seabirds, marine mammals, and groundfish.

An empirical Bayesian approach to incorporate directional movement information from a forage fish into the Arnason-Schwarz mark-recapture model

Summary: The study demonstrates how an empirical Bayesian approach can be used to incorporate directional movement information into the Arnason-Schwarz modeling framework to describe the survival and migration patterns of Pacific herring population in coastal Alaska.

Applying Bayesian model selection to determine ecological covariates for recruitment and natural mortality in stock assessment

John T. Trochta et al.

Summary: Incorporating ecological covariates into fishery stock assessments can improve estimates, however, model selection criteria have limitations and depend on often violated assumptions. Four popular selection criteria were used to identify covariates influencing natural mortality or recruitment in a Bayesian stock assessment of Pacific herring in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The results show most support for pink salmon increasing natural mortality, with ambiguous support for other fixed effects on natural mortality and recruitment.
