Influence of environmental factors on different life stages of European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) from the Mediterranean Sea: A literature review

Elena Fernandez-Corredor et al.

Summary: European anchovy and sardine are two important small pelagic fish species in the Mediterranean Sea, serving as bio-indicators of climate-driven changes. Studies have shown that temperature, depth, salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentration are the most commonly studied environmental factors affecting these species.

Heatwave-induced synchrony within forage fish portfolio disrupts energy flow to top pelagic predators

Mayumi L. Arimitsu et al.

Summary: During the Pacific marine heatwave of 2014-2016, key forage fish species in the Gulf of Alaska experienced reduced abundance and quality, leading to trophic instability within the system. Despite compensatory changes in age structure, size, growth or energy content of forage fish, none were able to fully mitigate the adverse impacts of the heatwave. Changes in zooplankton communities and the impact on the forage fish community led to disruptions in the normal pelagic food web, causing shifts in distribution, mass mortalities, and reproductive failures among seabirds, marine mammals, and groundfish.

Predator stomach contents can provide accurate indices of prey biomass

Elizabeth L. Ng et al.

Summary: By studying the stomach contents of Atlantic herring predators and survey data, we found that diet-based biomass indices showed similar decadal trends but varied greatly between predators and seasons on shorter time scales. The indices reflected prey biomass more than prey availability, but weak correlations indicated that not all biological processes were taken into account.

Trophic niche overlap between round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) and sympatric pelagic fish species in the Western Mediterranean

Eneko Bachiller et al.

Summary: The study suggests that potential competition for food resources exists between round sardinella and European sardine and anchovy, but they exhibit similar predation capabilities on large krill in spring, and their overlapping utilization of nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes in food sources.

Interannual trophic behaviour of a pelagic fish predator in the western Mediterranean Sea

Joan Gimenez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that a reduction in the biomass of key forage fish species in the western Mediterranean Sea could impact the trophic preferences of the little tunny, leading to changes in its diet composition and prey consumption habits. These changes may be influenced by the decrease in the body size and biomass of anchovy and sardine, causing an increase in the consumption of alternative prey by the little tunny.

Changes in Life History Traits of Small Pelagic Fish in the Western Mediterranean Sea

Marta Albo-Puigserver et al.

Summary: Small pelagic fish populations in the western Mediterranean Sea have experienced significant declines in biomass, particularly in the northern area. Environmental conditions partially explain the long-term changes in life history traits, with selected variables differing between areas, highlighting the importance of regional oceanographic conditions in understanding the dynamics of small pelagic fish.
