Holothurian fucosylated chondroitin sulfates and their potential benefits for human health: Structures and biological activities

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: Fucosylated chondroitin sulfates (FCS) are a type of sulfated polysaccharide found exclusively in the body wall of sea cucumber, with potential benefits in preventing metabolic syndromes and other diseases. Studies suggest that the positive effects of FCS may be achieved by modulating gut microbiota composition.

Re-understanding of structure and anticoagulation: Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate from sea cucumber Ludwigothurea grisea

Ronghua Yin et al.

Summary: In this study, the physicochemical properties and derivatives of Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate from sea cucumber Ludwigothurea grisea (FCSLg) were analyzed to decipher its structure. Oligosaccharides analysis revealed the presence of mono-fucose and heterodisaccharide branches in FCSLg, with the di-fucosyl branch being determined as D-GalNAcR1-(alpha 1,2)-LFucR2. The diverse sulfation patterns in the branches complicated the structure. This study provides a new understanding of FCSLg and offers a reliable method for deciphering FCS with complex branches.

Comparative Analysis of the Expression of Chondroitin Sulfate Subtypes and Their Inhibitory Effect on Axonal Growth in the Embryonic, Adult, and Injured Rat Brains

Moon Hang Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and effects of chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycans (CS-GAGs) on axonal growth in normal and injured rat brains. The results showed that CS-GAGs from normal adult rat brain exhibited higher inhibitory activity compared to the other groups. Analysis revealed that CS-A (4S) was the most abundant subtype in all three groups. Injured rat brain exhibited similar patterns to embryonic rat brain in the expression of CS subtypes and their inhibitory effect on axonal growth.

Structural characterization and anticoagulant analysis of the novel branched fucosylated glycosaminoglycan from sea cucumber Holothuria nobilis

Shanni Li et al.

Summary: In this study, glycosaminoglycan HnFG was extracted from sea cucumber Holothuria nobilis and its precise structure was determined, which exhibited potent activities in prolonging the activated partial thrombin time (APTT) and inhibiting intrinsic coagulation Xase (iXase). The oligosaccharides, on the other hand, showed no obvious effects.
