Maximizing fucoxanthin production in Odontella aurita by optimizing the ratio of red and blue light-emitting diodes in an auto-controlled internally illuminated photobioreactor

Hu Zhang et al.

Summary: The research showed that red light was more suitable for cell growth and fucoxanthin accumulation in Odontella aurita. By optimizing the ratios of red and blue light, both biomass and fucoxanthin production were further promoted. Critical assessment of protozoa contamination and control measures in mass culture of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Qing He et al.

Summary: This study identifies a heterolobosean amoeba as the most common and destructive predator in P. tricornutum cultures. The addition of 400 mg L-1 NH4HCO3 inhibits amoeba growth without significant impact on algal growth. Additionally, stopping culture mixing at night creates a hypoxia environment that further hinders amoeba growth. Consequently, the periodic supply of NH4HCO3 and the cessation of culture mixing at night can prevent or treat protozoan contamination in mass culture of P. tricornutum.

Song Wang et al.

Summary: In the last decade, fucoxanthin, as the most abundant but underutilized carotenoid, has gained attention for its bioactivities and health benefits. Traditional production from brown algae is limited by yield and cost, while microalgae show promise for sustainable and efficient commercial production. Research has focused on improving microalgae selection, cultivation conditions, biosynthesis pathways, and extraction techniques to overcome bottlenecks and facilitate commercialization. New techniques such as breeding elite strains, optimizing growth conditions, and utilizing genetic engineering are being used to scale up fucoxanthin production.

Marine Microalgae Contribution to Sustainable Development

Simone Merlo et al.

Summary: The burning of fossil fuels is unsustainable and leads to increased greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Microalgae offer a promising alternative energy source, particularly marine microalgae, but economic and technological improvements are needed for large-scale biofuel production. While large-scale marine microalgae biofuel production is not yet economically feasible, cultivating microalgae in seawater shows potential for smaller-scale viability and contributes to sustainable development goals. Further research and application will continue to explore the potential of microalgae bioenergy production.
