Production of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) by Haloferax mediterranei from Food Waste Derived Nutrients for Biodegradable Plastic Applications

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilized food waste as a low-cost feedstock to produce PHBV by Haloferax mediterranei, and found that a mixture of carboxylates can significantly increase PHBV yield. The results demonstrated the potential of food waste-derived nutrients to be effectively converted into PHBV, providing economic benefits to the current PHA industry and promoting organic waste reduction in landfills and waste management.

Glucose Metabolism and Acetate Switch in Archaea: the Enzymes in Haloferax volcanii

Tom Kuprat et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of glucose degradation via the semiphosphorylative Entner-Doudoroff pathway in the haloarchaeal model organism Haloferax volcanii. The research involves transcriptional analyses, growth experiments with deletion mutants, and characterization of all enzymes involved in the conversion of 3-phosphoglycerate to acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) and in anaplerosis. Additionally, the study reveals the metabolic pathway of acetate during aerobic growth on glucose and the functional involvement of enzymes in the acetate switch.

Pancreatic lipase inhibitors: The road voyaged and successes

Ashwani Kumar et al.

Summary: Human pancreatic lipase, a widely studied member of the human lipase superfamily, plays a significant role in the efficient digestion of dietary fat. Modulating pancreatic lipase may lead to the discovery of therapeutics that can inhibit fat absorption in the body. Studies have also shown synthetic pancreatic lipase inhibitors with potential benefits for obesity and metabolic disorders.

Haloarchaea as Cell Factories to Produce Bioplastics

Lorena Simo-Cabrera et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a global concern, with recycling being difficult. New research focuses on finding environmentally friendly bioplastics, with haloarchaea being studied for their ability to produce significant amounts of bioplastics. Microbes like haloarchaea show potential for industrial scale production of valuable products, reducing environmental pollution caused by petroleum-based plastics.

Effect of Carbon Sources in Carotenoid Production from Haloarcula sp. M1, Halolamina sp. M3 and Halorubrum sp. M5, Halophilic Archaea Isolated from Sonora Saltern, Mexico

Ana Sofia Vazquez-Madrigal et al.

Summary: This study identified seventeen halophilic archaea from the Santa Barbara saltern in Sonora, Mexico, belonging to Haloarcula, Halolamina, and Halorubrum genera. The presence of neutral lipids and different phospholipids in these strains was confirmed. Carotenoid production in response to glucose, succinic acid, and glutamic acid varied among the strains, with Halorubrum sp. M5 showing negative effects from certain carbon sources. This work highlights the diversity in growth and carotenoid production of haloarchaea under different carbon sources.
