Coupling relationship between current in-situ stress and natural fractures of continental tight sandstone oil reservoirs

Xinying Cui et al.

Summary: By integrating various types of data and experiments, we evaluated the relationship between current in-situ stress and natural fractures and conducted a case study on the Yanchang Formation in the western Ordos Basin, China. The study found that the Yanchang Formation predominantly consists of high-angle and vertical fractures that match the current in-situ stress state. Moreover, natural fractures tend to develop in specific geological locations and stress conditions, providing important insights for drilling and hydraulic fracturing activities.

Pore structure and fluid distribution of tight sandstone by the combined use of SEM, MICP and X-ray micro-CT

Yang Su et al.

Summary: This study characterized the pore structure and two-phase (brine and oil) flow experiment of a tight sandstone sample from the Lucaogou Formation in the Jimsar Sag, identifying interparticle and intraparticle pores, as well as the configuration and displacement process of oil clusters in the pore space. The pore-throat ratio and pore size were found to control the flow potential of the reservoir, with oil displacement by water suggested as a cooperative pore-filling event.

Provenance, depositional facies, and diagenesis controls on reservoir characteristics of the middle Miocene Tidal sandstones, Gulf of Suez Rift Basin: Integration of petrographic analysis and gamma-ray log patterns

Ahmed E. Radwan

Summary: The study focuses on analyzing the depositional environment and the impact of diagenesis on the reservoir pore system network of the Baba sandstone hydrocarbon reservoir in Egypt's south-central Gulf of Suez. Petrographic analysis reveals the significant physical and chemical diagenetic processes that have resulted in a decrease in primary porosity. The study provides valuable insights into how to overcome the lack of core samples in petroleum reservoirs, as well as interpreting the depositional settings and diagenesis control on reservoirs.

Modeling the Depositional Environment of the Sandstone Reservoir in the Middle Miocene Sidri Member, Badri Field, Gulf of Suez Basin, Egypt: Integration of Gamma-Ray Log Patterns and Petrographic Characteristics of Lithology

Ahmed E. Radwan

Summary: Understanding the depositional setting of siliciclastics reservoir is essential for exploration and development of hydrocarbon reservoirs. In this study, the absence of core samples in the middle Miocene Sidri Member in the Badri field was addressed by reconstructing its depositional settings using well logging patterns and petrographic characterization. The results indicated a diverse lithofacies, dominant porosity types, and three electrofacies that correspond to different depositional settings, providing valuable insights for similar hydrocarbon reservoirs lacking core samples.

Role played by clay content in controlling reservoir quality of submarine fan system, Forties Sandstone Member, Central Graben, North Sea

Abdulwahab Muhammad Bello et al.

Summary: Proximal to distal fan changes in sediment grain size, clay content, and clay coatings are key factors affecting the reservoir quality of submarine fan sandstones. The study showed that depositional facies and diagenesis both impact reservoir quality, with proximal-fan amalgamated sandstones having better quality than distal-fan mud-prone facies. Pore-filling clays between 10 and 30% have a negative effect on reservoir quality, while detrital clays and authigenic clay coatings can inhibit quartz cement precipitation.

Physical property and hydrocarbon enrichment characteristics of tight oil reservoir in Chang 7 division of Yanchang Formation, Xin'anbian oilfield, Ordos Basin, China

Wei-Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: Xin'anbian Oilfield in the Ordos Basin is the first large tight oilfield discovered in China, with significant increases in production of tight oil in recent years, indicating great exploration potential for Chang7 tight oil. The study systematically summarizes and analyzes the forming conditions of tight oil reservoirs based on hydrocarbon generation, sedimentary reservoirs, and hydrocarbon migration and accumulation, revealing characteristics such as porosity, permeability, and pore diameters of the reservoirs. The high-quality source rocks and sand bodies in subaqueous distributary channels play a crucial role in the formation and accumulation of the tight oil reservoirs.
