Health care provider practices in diagnosis and treatment of malaria in rural communities in Kisumu County, Kenya

Wilfred Ouma Otambo et al.

Summary: This study assessed the accuracy of malaria diagnosis and treatment practices in three healthcare facilities in rural western Kenya. The results showed disparities in malaria diagnosis, with many slide positive cases reported as negatives, and high presumptive treatment of slide negative cases. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) were found to be the most sensitive and specific diagnostic method.

Risk associations of submicroscopic malaria infection in lakeshore, plateau and highland areas of Kisumu County in western Kenya

Wilfred Ouma Otambo et al.

Summary: Topographic features and seasonality are major correlates of submicroscopic malaria infection in the Lake Victoria area of western Kenya. Residents of lakeshore zones, males, school-aged children, and those living in mud houses have increased risk of submicroscopic malaria infection.

Hyper-prevalence of submicroscopic Plasmodium falciparum infections in a rural area of western Kenya with declining malaria cases

Kevin O. Ochwedo et al.

Summary: A study conducted in rural western Kenya revealed a significant proportion of submicroscopic P. falciparum infections, which may have gone undetected by conventional microscopic examination. The prevalence of submicroscopic infections was higher in females and individuals not using LLINs.

Genetic diversity and population structure of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum surface protein Pfs47 in isolates from the lowlands in Western Kenya

Shirley A. Onyango et al.

Summary: Genetic diversity and haplotype distribution of the Pfs47 gene in Western Kenya were found to be high, with haplotype diversity ranging from 0.69 to 0.77 and nucleotide diversity from 0.10 to 0.12. Although negative Tajima's D values were observed across all sites, significant negative Fu's Fs values suggest potential population expansion or positive selection. Overall genetic differentiation index was not significant among parasite populations, indicating considerable gene flow between populations.

Asymptomatic Plasmodium infection and associated factors among pregnant women in the Merti district, Oromia, Ethiopia

Bereket Wake Subussa et al.

Summary: The study detected a relatively high prevalence of API among pregnant women, with factors such as previous infection by Plasmodium species, lack of insecticide-treated bed net use, and living close to stagnant water significantly associated with API. Anemia was significantly higher among Plasmodium-infected pregnant women compared to non-infected women.
