Self-Healable Acrylic-Based Covalently Adaptable Networks

Siyang Wang et al.

Summary: The combination of autonomous self-healing and reprocessing in a single material has significant application potential. A copolymer network capable of self-healing at room temperature and reprocessing at high temperature was developed. Reprocessing is achieved through dynamic exchange reactions of cross-links, while self-healing is facilitated by the reversible isomerization of C=C bonds and the recovery of inter-chain van der Waals interactions in the network.

Role of Organic Phosphates and Phosphonates in Catalyzing Dynamic Exchange Reactions in Thiol-Click Vitrimers

Khadijeh Moazzen et al.

Summary: Due to their strong Bronsted acidity, organic phosphates and phosphonates can catalyze dynamic transesterification reactions in hydroxyl ester networks, showing excellent solubility and no interference with cure kinetics or shelf-life. By studying their catalytic activity, it was found that the relaxation time and activation energy correlate well with the logarithmic acid dissociation constants of the Bronsted acids, expanding the scope of transesterification catalysts and being particularly interesting for the design of photoreactive vitrimers.

Mechanical and Structural Consequences of Associative Dynamic Cross-Linking in Acrylic Diblock Copolymers

Jacob S. A. Ishibashi et al.

Summary: The composition of low-T-g n-butylacrylate-block-(acetoxyaceto)-ethyl acrylate block polymers is investigated as a strategy to tune the properties of dynamically cross-linked vinylogous urethane vitrimers. Increasing the proportion of the cross-linkable block results in changes in thermorheological properties, structure, and stress relaxation that cannot be solely explained by increasing cross-link density. The thermomechanical and viscoelastic properties of block-copolymer-derived vitrimers are determined by the subtle interplay of microphase separation and network defects.

The effect of polarity on the molecular exchange dynamics in imine-based covalent adaptable networks

Sybren K. Schoustra et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the presence of polar domains in polyimine-based CANs significantly influences both the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of the materials, as well as the kinetics of dynamic imine bond exchange, enhancing the exchange rate greatly. The presence of polar groups surrounding reactive imine species can lead to a wider range of phase transition temperatures and affect stress relaxation processes related to network topology, local imine exchange, and diffusion-induced imine exchange in the polymer network.
