Nontraditional Organic/Polymeric Luminogens with Red-Shifted Fluorescence Emissions

Junwen Deng et al.

Summary: Nontraditional organic/polymeric luminogens, which lack conventional chromophores, have attracted significant attention for their fundamental understanding of photoluminescence mechanisms and potential applications. While most nontraditional luminogens emit blue fluorescence, there is limited research on those with green, yellow, and red emissions. Therefore, it is crucial to develop nontraditional luminogens with red-shifted emissions and understand their mechanisms.

The mysterious blue emission around 440 nm in carbonyl-based aliphatic clusteroluminogens

Zhiming Zhang et al.

Summary: Nonconjugated and nonaromatic heteroatoms-based structures have been found to exhibit visible emission at the clustering state, known as clusteroluminogens. The origin of this clusteroluminescence (CL) cannot be explained by traditional molecular photophysical theories, making investigation on CL significant. A common feature of C=O bond-based clusteroluminogens is the blue emission around 440 nm, which has been observed in various systems such as natural proteins, polyamide, polyester, and polyketone. The (n, pi*) transition of carbonyl group is suggested to be the most likely contributor to the 440 nm CL emission.

Bo Chu et al.

Summary: This paper reports the first example of linear nonconjugated polyesters with single-molecule white-light emission (SMWLE), achieved by adjusting the balance of structural flexibility and rigidity and altering the chemical structures of the monomer. Furthermore, the hierarchical structures of clusteroluminogens (CLgens) were manipulated to achieve pure SMWLE.

Jianlei Lu et al.

Summary: The study suggests a copolymerization strategy to tune the cloud point (T-cp) of Poly(methylacrylamide) (PMAM) by incorporating hydrophilic comonomers, resulting in a significant shift in T-cp. Experiments show that doped hydrophilic monomers enhance hydrogen bonding within polymer chains, leading to the change in T-cp range.

Aqueous Synthesis of Upper Critical Solution Temperature and Lower Critical Solution Temperature Copolymers through Combination of Hydrogen-Donors and Hydrogen-Acceptors

Jianlei Lu et al.

Summary: The authors reported a novel aqueous copolymerization strategy to prepare polymers with tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST) or lower critical solution temperature (LCST) from non-responsive monomers. By simply replacing a monomer, the thermo-responsiveness of the copolymers can be converted from UCST-type to LCST-type. The cloud points of the copolymers can be rationally tuned with their monomer ratios and the condition of the solvent.

Summary: This work presents photoresponsive polymers that undergo a shift in fluorescence emission wavelength after UV irradiation, showing potential applications in fluorescence patterning and bioimaging. Additionally, the copolymers exhibit thermal sensitivity in aqueous solutions, with their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) shifting with the content of hydrophobic units. The temperature-triggered volume phase transition selectively switches off fluorescence from certain mechanisms, while leaving others unaffected, allowing for versatile applications.
