The properties and suitability of commercial bio-based epoxies for use in fiber-reinforced composites

Joseph S. Terry et al.

Summary: Manufacturers are considering bio-based alternatives to petroleum-derived epoxies due to environmental concerns, but a lack of information hinders this substitution. Commercially available bio-based epoxy systems are being compared, with high bio-based content resins used for vacuum infusion composites, showing promising mechanical properties comparable to conventional epoxies.

Effect of processing techniques and residual solvent on the thermal/mechanical properties of epoxy-cellulose nanocrystal nanocomposites

Ke Qiu et al.

Summary: Epoxy nanocomposites reinforced with 0-5 wt% cellulose nanocrystal were fabricated using a solution casting method. Dropwise mixing of CNC and epoxy resulted in more homogeneously-dispersed CNCs and improved mechanical properties. Residual solvent in the composite mixture impacted the curing behavior of the nanocomposite epoxy, while the presence of solvent was essential for preparing well-dispersed CNC phase in the hardener solution.

The effect of modified tannic acid (TA) eco-epoxy adhesives on mode I fracture toughness of bonded joints

Mohamed Nasr Saleh et al.

Summary: In this study, two synthesized eco-epoxy components based on TA were used to bond aluminum and CFRP, resulting in one adhesive improving the fracture toughness while the other decreased it. A stick-slip pattern of crack growth was observed, with different adhesives leading to different failure modes.

Curing of epoxidized linseed oil: Investigation of the curing reaction with different hardener types

Andrea Todorovic et al.

Summary: The study found that the type and amount of hardener significantly affect the curing reaction and performance characteristics of epoxidized linseed oil, with the optimal mixing ratio needing to be experimentally determined rather than calculated. The investigated thermosets exhibit different glass transition temperatures and mechanical performances after curing, ranging from soft and flexible to stiff and rigid.
