Analytical Evaluation of Carbamate and Organophosphate Pesticides in Human and Environmental Matrices: A Review

Nonkululeko Landy Mdeni et al.

Summary: Pesticides, synthetic compounds used in agriculture for pest and insect control, can have positive impacts on productivity but also pose risks to non-target organisms and the environment. Analytical methods for evaluating carbamate and organophosphate pesticides in human and environmental samples have been reviewed.

The role of fibrosis index FIB-4 in predicting liver fibrosis stage and clinical prognosis: A diagnostic or screening tool?

Xiao-lan Xu et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the ability of the fibrosis index based on four factors (FIB-4) in identifying fibrosis stages, prognosis in chronic liver disease, and outcomes in acute liver injury. FIB-4 showed high accuracy in predicting advanced fibrosis in viral hepatitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but lower accuracy in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and autoimmune hepatitis. It also demonstrated predictive value for hepatocellular carcinoma incidence and mortality, high-risk varices in cirrhosis patients, and long-term survival in hepatocellular carcinoma patients. In acute liver injury caused by COVID-19, FIB-4 had predictive value for mechanical ventilation and 30-day mortality. Finally, FIB-4 may serve as a screening tool for secondary prevention of NAFLD in high-risk populations.

Mechanisms and treatment strategies of organophosphate pesticide induced neurotoxicity in humans: A critical appraisal

Shahid Yousuf Ganie et al.

Summary: Organophosphates (OPs) are commonly used pesticides that can cause neurotoxic effects and other disorders. Humans are exposed to OPs through different routes and biomonitoring of OP markers can help measure and control exposure severity. Standard treatments for OP poisoning include administration of atropine and acetylcholine esterase restoration therapy. It is important to increase awareness about the potential risks of OP exposure and reevaluate exposure levels.

Association between exposure to organophosphorus pesticides and the risk of diabetes among US Adults: Cross-sectional findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Xianwei Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) exposure on the prevalence of diabetes in American adults. The results showed a positive correlation between urinary OPPs metabolites concentrations and diabetes. Combined exposure to OPPs metabolites was significantly associated with diabetes, with diethylphosphate being the major contributor. These findings add credibility to the argument that OPP exposure might trigger diabetes.

Analysis of environmental chemical mixtures and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: NHANES 1999-2014

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between chemical mixtures and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Through the analysis of urine and blood samples, it was found that specific types of chemical mixtures were positively associated with the development of NAFLD. Furthermore, the effects of some chemical mixtures on NAFLD development were found to vary based on individuals' lifestyles.

Summary: Increasing the duration of total PA and moderate to vigorous PA is associated with lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in individuals with NAFLD, while longer duration of sedentary behavior does not affect mortality risk.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of FIB-4, APRI, and AST/ALT ratio with FibroScan for assessing hepatic fibrosis in NAFLD patients, and found that APRI is the most appropriate substitute for detecting significant fibrosis in NAFLD patients.

Organopesticides and fertility: where does the link lead to?

Baskar Venkidasamy et al.

Summary: Organopesticides (OPs) are synthetic chemicals widely used in agriculture and can have negative effects on human reproductive functions, such as fluctuation in sex hormone levels, delayed menstrual cycle, and altered ovarian function. Exposure to various OPs may impair fertility in women and pose a high risk to reproductive potential.

Simulation of hemo- and biochemical toxicities associated with chronic inhalation exposure to 2,2-Dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (DDVP) in Wistar rat

Kehinde Olusola Awotunsin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of chronic exposure to DDVP on Wistar rats by monitoring hematological and biochemical changes. Results showed significant abnormalities in blood parameters and organ functions in rats exposed to DDVP, with higher concentrations leading to cholinergic signs and stunted growth. The study emphasized the hazards of mishandling DDVP and the risks associated with non-compliance with PPE among workers in contact with DDVP, as well as misuse/abuse in animals.

Summary: Unhealthy lifestyles play a small role in mediating socioeconomic disparities in health among US and UK adults. While promoting healthy lifestyles alone may not substantially reduce socioeconomic health inequalities, it is still important in reducing the burden of disease in different socioeconomic subgroups.
