Reconstructing crustal thickness evolution from europium anomalies in detrital zircons

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: A new data compilation shows a positive correlation between zircon Eu/Eu* and crustal thickness in intermediate to felsic rocks, which has been used to infer crustal thickness. The calibration of a crustal thickness proxy based on Eu anomalies in zircons allows for the reconstruction of crustal thickness evolution in magmatic arcs and orogens. Analysis of detrital zircons from southern Tibet reveals two episodes of crustal thickening since the Cretaceous, temporally consistent with contractional deformation of sedimentary strata.

Singularity analysis of igneous zircon U-Pb age and Hf isotopic record in the Zhongdian arc, northwest Yunnan, China: Implications for Indosinian magmatic flare-up and the formation of porphyry copper deposits

Yuanzhi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the magmatic activity and formation of porphyry copper deposits in the Zhongdian arc in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, revealing the spatiotemporal evolution of magmatic activity and the eastward migration of magmatism in the region. Analysis of igneous zircon U-Pb dating data and hafnium isotopic composition changes sheds light on the magmatic processes and evolution around the Zhongdian arc, suggesting a correlation between the Indosinian magmatic flare-up and slab subduction, steepening, and breakoff.

Orogenic quiescence in Earth's middle age

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the average thickness of active continental crust on Earth varies on billion-year time scales, with mountain-building processes closely related to nutrient cycling on Earth's surface. The formation of the Nuna-Rodinia supercontinent led to a gradual thinning of the crust, impacting ocean nutrient cycling and the evolution of life.
