Investigating Pseudo-nitzschia australis introduction to the Gulf of Maine with observations and models

Suzanna Clark et al.

Summary: This study investigates the unprecedented Pseudo-nitzschia australis bloom in the Gulf of Maine in 2016, and suggests that it may have been influenced by changes in water properties on the Scotian Shelf. Continued monitoring of Pseudo-nitzschia populations in the Gulf of Maine is necessary, as well as sampling on the Scotian Shelf to map the upstream distribution of this species.

Changes in the Gulf Stream preceded rapid warming of the Northwest Atlantic Shelf

Afonso Goncalves Neto et al.

Summary: Research indicates a northward shift of the Gulf Stream towards the Tail of the Grand Banks on the Northwest Atlantic Shelf in 2008, disrupting the connectivity of the Labrador Current and potentially contributing to abrupt warming and an ecosystem shift a year later. Historical observations suggest similar events may have occurred in the 1970s.
