DPP4 (Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4) Inhibition Increases Catecholamines Without Increasing Blood Pressure During Sustained ACE (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme) Inhibitor Treatment

Jessica R. Wilson et al.

Summary: DPP4 inhibition may increase catecholamine levels, but does not increase blood pressure. Increased catecholamines during concurrent use of ACE and DPP4 inhibitors may contribute to cardiovascular complications in patients predisposed to heart failure.

Summary: Male hypertensive rats show imbalance between the ACE/Ang II and ACE2/Ang-(1-7) pathways in the lungs, mainly due to ACE2 down-regulation, which may contribute to and exacerbate lung injury in respiratory infections, including COVID-19.

DPP4 inhibition mitigates ANG II-mediated kidney immune activation and injury in male mice

Ravi Nistala et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) with saxagliptin (Saxa) is renoprotective in conditions associated with activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). This study demonstrates that DPP4 plays a key role in promoting ANG II-mediated kidney inflammation and injury, leading to the activation of proinflammatory and profibrotic mediators and the suppression of anti-inflammatory regulators. DPP4 inhibition with Saxa attenuates kidney injury independent of blood pressure reduction.

Urinary DPP4 correlates with renal dysfunction, and DPP4 inhibition protects against the reduction in megalin and podocin expression in experimental CKD

Acaris Benetti et al.

Summary: The study found that DPP4 inhibition can alleviate proteinuria in rats with chronic kidney disease and prevent the reduction of important protein expression. Furthermore, the urinary DPP4 activity may serve as a biomarker for renal disease and progression.
