A comparative study of the Early Pleistocene carnivore guild from Dmanisi (Georgia)

Saverio Bartolini-Lucenti et al.

Summary: The carnivore guild of the Early Pleistocene site of Dmanisi is highly similar to the late Villafranchian sites in Europe but shows less resemblance to African or Asian assemblages.

Megantereon adroveri from the Early Pleistocene of Taurida Cave, Crimea, and the European Lineage of Dirk-toothed Cats

A. V. Lavrov et al.

Summary: Recent field surveys in the Taurida Cave in Crimea, Russia, unearthed remains of the dirk-toothed cat Megantereon, which were compared anatomically and biometrically with other sites. The analysis suggests the Taurida remains belong to the Villafranchain European species Megantereon adroveri, supporting the idea of a continuous European lineage of dirk-toothed cats.

Summary: The discovery of Canis (Xenocyon) fossils dating back to 2.6 million years ago in France suggests early presence of hypercarnivorous canids in western Europe, with distinctive dentognathic adaptations indicating predatory behavior.

Spatial heterogeneity facilitates carnivore coexistence

Andrew B. Davies et al.

Summary: Contrary to previous studies suggesting strong spatial avoidance of lions by wild dogs, the primary lion-avoidance strategy of wild dogs was found to be selecting landscape features that aid in avoiding lion detection in this new study. This habitat selection by wild dogs was commonly used, especially in areas and during times of high lion-encounter risk, indicating a proactive response to lion risk. The findings suggest that spatial landscape heterogeneity could provide an alternative mechanism for carnivore coexistence, especially as shrinking carnivore ranges lead to increased contact between inferior competitors and dominant species.

The extinction of the giant hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris and a reappraisal of the Epivillafranchian and Galerian Hyaenidae in Europe: Faunal turnover during the Early-Middle Pleistocene Transition

Alessio Iannucci et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the European fossil record of the giant, short-faced hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris and reviews the entire record of Epivillafranchian and Galerian Hyaenidae. It found that P. brevirostris disappeared around 0.8 million years ago, marking a turnover between different hyena species.

Use of meat resources in the Early Pleistocene assemblages from Fuente Nueva 3 (Orce, Granada, Spain)

Summary: Recent research has shown that early humans in Europe had access to a variety of animal meat and bone marrow, and likely faced competition from large predators. However, little is known about their specific food acquisition methods and butchery processes.

The early hunting dog from Dmanisi with comments on the social behaviour in Canidae and hominins

Saverio Bartolini-Lucenti et al.

Summary: The paper reports on the discovery of early carnivorous canid fossils at the Dmanisi site, showing highly cooperative pack-hunting features and social care towards group members. This evolved hypercarnivorous canid from East Asia has one of its earliest records in the Caucasus at Dmanisi, dispersing towards Europe and Africa in a parallel route to hominins. The altruistic behavior towards group members by early Pleistocene hominins and hunting dogs is a topic discussed in evolutionary biology for over a century.

Early Pleistocene faunivorous hominins were not kleptoparasitic, and this impacted the evolution of human anatomy and socio-ecology

Manuel Dominguez-Rodrigo et al.

Summary: Humans are unique in their diet, physiology and socio-reproductive behavior compared to other primates. This uniqueness in adaptation began around two million years ago, coinciding with various evolutionary changes such as encephalization and the adoption of a fully terrestrial lifestyle.
