Assessment of Laryngeal Sensory Function using a Tactile Aesthesiometer in Healthy Adults

Summary: Laryngeal sensory function in healthy adults was assessed using tactile stimuli, and it was found that the elicitation of laryngeal adductor reflex (LAR) is associated with laryngeal subsite, tactile force, age, and sex. Male gender, aging, and a more lateral subsite decrease the capability of LAR elicitation.

The Effects of Self-Esteem, Coping, and Voice-Related Quality of Life on Communicative Participation Before and After BOTOX® Treatment for Spasmodic Dysphonia

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the percent change in communicative participation in individuals with spasmodic dysphonia (SD) pre- and post-BOTOX (R) treatment, and to explore if this change is predicted by self-esteem, coping, and/or Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) changes. The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in communicative participation measures before and after BOTOX (R) treatment among participants with SD. There was a strong positive correlation between change in coping and voice-related QOL.

Aesthesiometer-Based Testing for Laryngopharyngeal Hyposensitivity

Summary: A method for threshold estimation of the laryngeal adductor reflex (LAR) response using Cheung-Bearelly monofilaments was developed. By adopting a decision tree protocol, higher threshold can be confirmed for patients with a negative LAR response to initial 5-0 monofilament stimulation and positive response to subsequent 4-0 monofilament stimulation. Over 90% of asymptomatic adults are expected to have a positive LAR response to 5-0 or 4-0 monofilament stimulation, while a negative response to 4-0 monofilament stimulation may indicate laryngopharyngeal hyposensitivity.

Novel Adaptation of a Validated Tactile Aesthesiometer to Evaluate Laryngopharyngeal Sensation

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate laryngopharyngeal sensation at specific subsites using a novel adaptation of a buckling force aesthesiometer. Results showed that the aryepiglottic fold and medial pyriform sinus were the most responsive, while the lateral pyriform sinus was the least responsive. These findings could be useful in assessing sensory dysfunction in various laryngopharyngeal disorders and guiding the development of innovative treatments.
