Xiaoyang Fu et al.

Summary: This minireview provides a brief introduction to the fundamental challenges associated with anode alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) in alkaline direct alcohol fuel cells (ADAFCs), as well as the key performance metrics and evaluation protocols for benchmarking AOR electrocatalysts. Recent advances in noble-metal based AOR electrocatalysts, such as Pt, Pd, and Rh, are summarized with a focus on design criteria for improving specific activity and electrochemical surface area to achieve high mass activity and long term durability. Strategies to enhance Faradaic efficiency and reduce overpotential are also discussed. The article concludes with a brief perspective on future challenges and opportunities.

Electrolyte-Layer-Tunable ATR-SEIRAS for Simultaneous Detection of Adsorbed and Dissolved Species in Electrochemistry

Xian-Yin Ma et al.

Summary: A balanced detection of both adsorbates and dissolved species is crucial for understanding the electrochemical reaction mechanism, but it remains challenging for different modes of electrochemical infrared spectroscopy. In this study, we report a novel electrochemical wide-frequency ATR-SEIRAS with a thin-layer flow cell design, enabling the simultaneous detection of surface and solution species.

Facile construction of mesoporous carbon enclosed with NiCoPx nanoparticles for desirable Pt-based catalyst support in methanol oxidation

Junjie Ding et al.

Summary: A novel nanoarchitecture has been successfully constructed by confining bimetallic phosphides within mesoporous carbon as Pt support, leading to enhanced catalytic activity and stability in methanol oxidation reaction. The synergistic effect between Pt, NiCoPx, and mesoporous carbon has resulted in increased active sites and intrinsic activity per site. The encapsulation carbon layer protects the co-catalytic effect of NiCoPx after long-time exposure.

Essential analysis of cyclic voltammetry of methanol electrooxidation using the differential electrochemical mass spectrometry

Lihua Lai et al.

Summary: The cyclic voltammetry testing method for methanol electrooxidation is commonly used to find anodic catalysts for direct methanol fuel cells. The ratio of peak currents is often used to evaluate CO tolerance of Pt-based catalysts, but in this study it is shown that both peak currents are related to methanol consumption at the electrode surface. The peak area ratio is proposed as a criterion related to the overlap between methanol oxidation potentials and the reduction potentials of the oxidized surface.

Dispersion of Complex Refractive Indices for Intense Vibrational Bands. I. Quantitative Spectra

Ryo Murata et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the dispersion of complex refractive indices for intense vibrational bands of organic liquids, determining variations in both real and imaginary refractive indices through infrared absorption measurement. Accurate spectral data provide a reference for calibrating absolute infrared intensities by quantum chemical calculations, allowing for critical comparison between experimental and computational results. These precise dispersion data will be used to analyze vibrational spectroscopy of interfaces in future research.
