Enteric complex layer-coated controlled release of capsaicin from phytosterol/γ-cyclodextrin microparticles via guest exchange reaction with taurocholic acid

Hiroshi Sasako et al.

Summary: Phytosterol/gamma-cyclodextrin microparticles have a capsule-like structure where the core is surrounded by outer layers of inclusion complex crystal. The dissolution of capsaicin from the microparticles was enhanced in simulated intestinal fluids containing taurocholate, inducing rapid release of capsaicin. The release mechanism involves guest exchange reaction with taurocholate, triggering the collapse of the inclusion complex crystal shell and subsequent drug release.

Freeze-drying of nanoparticles: How to overcome colloidal instability by formulation and process optimization

Eduard Trenkenschuh et al.

Summary: Lyophilization of nanoparticle suspensions is a promising technology for improving stability and providing new routes of administration in solid state. Despite being considered a gentle drying process, freeze-drying can cause stresses leading to physical instability. Nanoparticles vary in their sensitivity to lyophilization stress due to their heterogeneous physico-chemical properties, but basic concepts can still be deduced.

Cyclodextrin-based Pickering emulsions: functional properties and drug delivery applications

Mario Jug et al.

Summary: Cyclodextrins (CDs) are biocompatible cyclic oligosaccharides widely used in various industrial applications. They stabilize emulsions by inclusion complexation, forming Pickering emulsions without surfactants, offering improved stability and environmental compatibility. CD stabilization mechanisms, applications in drug delivery, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals, as well as promising antifungal uses, are discussed in this review, along with potential translational medicine applications in antiviral and antibacterial fields.
