Tailoring Ordered Wrinkle Arrays for Tunable Surface Performances by Template-Modulated Gradient Films

Senjiang Yu et al.

Summary: This study reports on the controllable heterogeneous wrinkles in template-modulated thickness-gradient metal films sputter-deposited on polydimethylsiloxane substrates. The surface performances are well controlled by the wrinkle arrays achieved by adjusting the deposition time, copper grid period, template shape, and lifting height.

Dynamic Surface Wrinkles for In Situ Light-Driven Dynamic Gratings

Tianjiao Ma et al.

Summary: A facile and feasible strategy is proposed in this study to construct a near-infrared radiation-driven dynamic diffraction grating based on a double-sided surface pattern, which is formed by wrinkles on both sides. Various adjustable diffraction patterns can be generated using this technique, showing potential applications in smart display, sensing, and imaging systems.

Surface Wrinkling on Polymer Films

Belda Amelia Junisu et al.

Summary: A series of gold precursor solutions were prepared by dissolving HAuCl4 and its mixtures with K2CO3 in deionized water. In the presence of K2CO3, AuCl4- ions hydrolyze to form [AuCl4-x(OH)(x)](-) complex ions. P4VP films were deposited on SiOx/Si and formed periodic wrinkles when immersed in aqueous solutions and dried. The periodicity and amplitude of the wrinkles were strongly influenced by initial thickness, AuCl4- ion content, and residual stress.

Reversible Mechanochromisms via Manipulating Surface Wrinkling

Kai Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, we report three reversible mechanochromic phenomena in simple material systems by harnessing mechano-responsive wrinkling dynamics. The results demonstrate the potential applications of these materials in smart displays, stretchable strain sensors, and antipeeping/anticounterfeiting devices.

Intricate evolutions of multiple-period post-buckling patterns in bilayers

Zhe Cheng et al.

Summary: The study reveals the nonlinear morphology evolution with multiple mode transitions in compliant film/substrate bilayers using lattice models. It shows that substrate pre-tension and modulus ratio can alter surface morphology, leading to hierarchical wrinkles or wrinkle-to-ridge transition. Phase diagrams based on different constitutions characterize the influences of different factors on ultimate pattern formation.

Capillary-Induced Wrinkle-to-Fold Transitions Under Biaxial Compression

So Nagashima et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for causing wrinkles to evolve into folds using water droplets and investigates the impact of capillary forces on this process. The folded areas can be controlled by adjusting the volume and number of droplets.

Drop Spreading and Confinement in Swelling-Driven Folding of Thin Films

Derek Breid et al.

Summary: This study examines the mechanism of folding induced by solvent drops on a film, revealing a strong coupling between folding and drop spreading due to capillary effects. When the film is weakly adhered to the substrate, solvent drops spread further on the film, leading to different shapes of folds.
