Bringing seascape ecology to the deep seabed: A review and framework for its application

Denise J. B. Swanborn et al.

Summary: Seascape ecology is a new pattern-oriented and integrative science that focuses on quantifying ecological patterns in the sea and linking spatial patterns to biodiversity and ecological processes. It provides a framework for understanding and managing marine ecosystems by generating new scientific insights at relevant spatial and temporal scales.

Automatic classification and mapping of the seabed using airborne LiDAR bathymetry

Lukasz Janowski et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel methodological approach to assess the suitability of Airborne LiDAR Bathymetry for automatic classification and mapping of the seafloor. By using Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis and machine learning supervised classifiers, the study successfully achieved automatic mapping with an overall accuracy of up to 94% in several study sites. The method also demonstrated that the Multiresolution Index of Ridge Top Flatness can be used to quickly and automatically determine sandbar crests and ridge tops.

The high biodiversity and vulnerability of two Mediterranean bathyal seamounts support the need for creating offshore protected areas

Marzia Bo et al.

Summary: Seamounts host rich deep-sea ecosystems, but intense fishing pressure has led to biodiversity loss. Scarcity of data for Mediterranean seamounts makes it difficult to identify management strategies, highlighting the need for conservation actions and protected areas.

Biogeophysical influence of large-scale bathymetric habitat types on mesophotic and upper bathyal demersal fish assemblages: a Hawaiian case study

Astrid Brigitta Leitner et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of seamounts, pinnacles, and crests on fish habitat. It found that crests are preferred habitat for fish, as they alter flow conditions, double fish abundance, and concentrate fish at crests rather than uniformly distributing them along the island shelf.

Seascape ecology: identifying research priorities for an emerging ocean sustainability science

S. J. Pittman et al.

Summary: Seascape ecology, as a marine-centric interdisciplinary science, lacks a coherent prioritization of key research questions. Using a 2-stage Delphi method, this study identified priority research themes including seascape change, connectivity, scale, ecosystem-based management, and emerging technologies. The analysis revealed congruence and discrepancies in priority rankings across different respondent groups.

A Scalable, Supervised Classification of Seabed Sediment Waves Using an Object-Based Image Analysis Approach

Gerard Summers et al.

Summary: This study applied object-based image analysis to classify multibeam bathymetry data and compared the accuracy of four classifiers, demonstrating that the voting ensemble classifier achieved the most consistent accuracy scores across high-resolution and low-resolution sites.
