Conservation Agriculture: factors and drivers of adoption and scalable innovative practices in Indo-Gangetic plains of India- a review

H. S. Jat et al.

Summary: Conventional-till agriculture is harmful to the environment in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, while Conservation Agriculture (CA) offers a more sustainable and profitable approach with reduced use of irrigation water and energy. Integrating mungbean with CA-based rice-wheat systems improves productivity and profitability, while replacing rice with maize can further increase yields and profits while significantly reducing water usage. Additionally, CA systems with subsurface drip irrigation show higher productivity and water savings compared to conventional systems, making them more adaptable to extreme climatic conditions.

Conservation Agriculture farming systems in rainfed annual crop production in South Africa

R. van Antwerpen et al.

Summary: South Africa, being a water scarce country with limited arable land, should focus on implementing soil and water conservation systems for sustainable agricultural production. Conservation agriculture systems in South Africa include measures to control erosion and soil compaction, which need to be carefully integrated with existing farming systems. It is suggested that training of CA specialists is important to assist farmers in selecting and implementing appropriate conservation agriculture systems.

Influence of 9 years of permanent raised beds and contour furrowing on soil health in conservation agriculture based systems in Tigray region, Ethiopia

Tesfay Araya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term influence of CA-based systems on soil health and crop productivity in northern Ethiopia from 2005 to 2013. Results showed higher arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spore abundance and root colonization, as well as significantly different soil N and available P content in PRB and CF compared to CT. Additionally, higher straw and grain yield were recorded in PRB and CF treatments. The study concludes that CA-based systems have the potential to improve crop productivity through enhanced soil health.

Near-saturated soil hydraulic conductivity and pore characteristics as influenced by conventional and conservation tillage practices in North-West Himalayan region, India

Deepak Singh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of different tillage practices on soil hydraulic properties, showing that zero tillage outperforms conventional tillage and minimum tillage. The zero-tillage system was found to enhance soil hydraulic properties, indicating its potential benefits for sustainable agriculture.

Long term impact of different tillage systems on carbon pools and stocks, soil bulk density, aggregation and nutrients: A field meta-analysis

Summary: Intensive tillage has negative impacts on soil physical quality and organic carbon stocks. Conservation tillage systems, such as no-till, improve soil fertility and stability of soil aggregates, leading to higher organic carbon content and nutrient availability.

Study on soil water retention and infiltration rate: a case study in eastern Iran

Saeedreza Moazeni-Noghondar et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the soil water retention curve (SWRC) and its effects on infiltration rate and runoff generation in an arid area in eastern Iran, using geological formation and topographic wetness index (TWI) as key variables. The results showed that soil water retention properties, infiltration rates, and runoff generation capacities were influenced by geological formation and TWI, with sandstone formations having higher retention and faster infiltration rates than shale formations. The conversion of the soil water curve allowed for predicting post-rainfall soil water conditions, with areas in the shale formation with maximum TWI exhibiting the highest water retention potential and lowest infiltration rates.

Summary: Conservation agriculture practices can increase soil organic carbon and alter pore size distribution, but have limited impact on soil water holding capacity of the whole soil profile; however, they have a positive effect on water-saving and availability.
