Modelling soil salinity effects on salt water uptake and crop growth using a modified denitrification-decomposition model: A phytoremediation approach

Syed Hamid Hussain Shah et al.

Summary: Soil salinization is a common issue affecting global food production, and phytoremediation technology is considered a feasible and cost-effective method for reclamation. This study proposes a dynamic phytoremediation model for salt-affected soil, representing processes such as plant salt uptake and biomass growth. The simulation results provide reasonable data for further analysis and suggest that salt-tolerant crops may be effective in remediation, depending on environmental conditions.

The seed primer and biofertilizer performances of living Chlorella pyrenoidosa on Chenopodium quinoa under saline-alkali condition

Chen Ma et al.

Summary: Soil salinization and alkalization severely limit agricultural production, but using biofertilizer can mitigate their impact and enhance agricultural sustainability. This study investigated the effects of living green microalgae on crop growth under saline-alkali stress and found that algal biofertilizer promotes germination and plant growth of crops under these conditions.

Soil salinization management for sustainable development: A review

Ajay Singh

Summary: Expanding irrigated agriculture is essential to feed the growing global population, but it can lead to soil salinization without proper management, which is a persistent environmental issue. Over 20% of global irrigated areas currently face soil salinization and waterlogging, with potential expansion to over 50% by 2050. Proper management of soil salinization is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and comprehensive measures are needed to address this environmental problem.

Mitigation of soil salinization and alkalization by bacterium-induced inhibition of evaporation and salt crystallization

Ziyan Wang et al.

Summary: The salt-resistant bacterium B. subtilis BSN-1 was found to reduce the pH of saline soil solution and inhibit the precipitation of Ca-P compounds, thereby suppressing the crystallization of phosphate and increasing the content of active phosphate, offering a promising solution for amending and remediating saline-alkali soil.

Chlorophyll fluorescence-A tool to assess photosynthetic performance and stress photophysiology in symbiotic marine invertebrates and seaplants

Ranjeet Bhagooli et al.

Summary: Chlorophyll a fluorescence is a valuable tool for assessing photosynthetic performance in marine autotrophs, providing rapid, non-invasive, sensitive and convenient measurements. This technique, including tools like Pulse-Amplitude-Modulated (PAM) and Fast Repetition Rate (FRR) fluorometry, is widely used in marine studies to measure natural variations, stress responses, and adaptation to changing environments. Stressors can include environmental, biological, physical, and chemical factors, and the strengths, limitations, and future perspectives of using chlorophyll fluorescence in assessing symbiotic marine organisms and seaplants are carefully evaluated.
